If you're passionate about working with data and want to make a tangible impact in a dynamic and collaborative environment, this role is for you. We're looking for someone to take ownership of core data systems, play a leading role in integrating and streamlining information across platforms, and help shape the future of a well-established academic setting.

What you’ll be doing:

Data Management & Integration

This is a data-heavy role with real depth and variety. You'll:

  • Design and maintain robust data integrations between systems and services
  • Monitor data pipelines to ensure integrity, accuracy, and resilience
  • Develop and optimise internal database infrastructure
  • Troubleshoot and resolve integration issues
  • Produce clear documentation and diagrams that map the data architecture

SQL & Automation

You’ll be the go-to expert on all things SQL, and you’ll also use tools like PowerShell and Node-RED to enhance and automate processes. Expect to work with:

  • Microsoft SQL Server (2017 onwards)
  • T-SQL scripting and database optimisation
  • Data transformation best practices and tooling
  • Integration of internally and externally hosted applications

Broader IT Involvement (with a data-first lens)

While your main focus is data, you’ll also support and contribute to broader IT operations. You’ll collaborate with the wider tech team on:

  • Cloud-based services and virtualised environments
  • Security and compliance around data handling and access
  • Disaster recovery planning and data backup strategies
  • Strategic planning for future data and IT improvements

Essential Requirements:

  • Proven experience managing and developing databases in a live environment
  • Deep knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server and scripting languages (T-SQL)
  • Practical experience with data integration platforms
  • Familiarity with technologies like Windows Server, VMware, SAN/NAS storage, and backup solutions
  • Full right to work in the UK without any restrictions
  • Be within a 45 minute commute of Cambridge and happy working onsite 5 days a week

Why this role?

You’ll be working in a respected and forward-thinking institution that values reliable, secure, and future-ready IT and data systems. You'll have the autonomy to lead on data strategy, backed by a supportive team and an environment that encourages professional growth and continuous improvement.

This is an ideal role for someone who enjoys rolling up their sleeves to solve real-world data problems and wants their expertise to make a difference.
