Job summary
The Band 7 Business Intelligence Developer is a senior, hands-on role within the Business Intelligence team, reporting directly to the Head of BI. The postholder will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining high-quality data warehouse, reporting, and analytics solutions that support clinical, operational, and corporate decision-making across the Trust. The role has a strong technical focus, with day-to-day responsibilities including SQL development, data warehouse modelling, and the creation of Power BI reports and dashboards. The postholder will work closely with a wide range of stakeholders to translate complex information requirements into robust, reliable, and user-friendly BI solutions. As a senior member of the BI function, the postholder will contribute to improving data quality, standardisation, and reporting best practice, as well as supporting national and local reporting requirements. The role plays a key part in enabling a data-driven culture within the organisation, ensuring that timely, accurate, and meaningful insight is available to support service improvement, operational performance, and patient care.
Main duties of the job
Design, develop, and maintain robust Business Intelligence solutions using SQL, the Trusts data warehouse, and Power BI to meet clinical, operational, and corporate reporting needs. Develop and optimise SQL queries, views, and data models to support performant, reliable, and scalable reporting and analytics solutions. Build, publish, and maintain Power BI datasets, reports, and dashboards, ensuring they are user-friendly, well-documented, and aligned with agreed information standards. Work closely with stakeholders across the organisation to understand information requirements, translating business and clinical needs into technical BI solutions. Contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of the Trusts data warehouse, including data modelling, data quality checks, and adherence to best practice. Ensure the accuracy, consistency, and integrity of data used in reporting, proactively identifying and resolving data quality issues. Support delivery of national and local reporting requirements, ensuring outputs meet required definitions, standards, and deadlines. Provide expert BI and reporting advice to colleagues and stakeholders, acting as a technical point of contact within the BI team. Support the Head of BI in developing and maintaining BI standards, documentation, and best practice across reporting and analytics. Participate in testing, validation, and peer review of BI solutions to ensure quality, reliability, and maintainability.

The Band 7 Business Intelligence Developer is a senior technical role within the Business Intelligence function, reporting directly to the Head of BI. The postholder will work with a high degree of autonomy to deliver high-quality data warehouse and reporting solutions that support decision-making across the Trust.
The role is predominantly hands-on, requiring strong technical expertise in SQL, data warehousing, and Power BI. The postholder will be responsible for designing and developing efficient SQL queries, views, and data models that underpin reliable and performant reporting. This includes contributing to the ongoing development and optimisation of the Trust’s data warehouse, ensuring solutions are scalable, well-structured, and aligned with agreed data standards.
The postholder will design, build, and maintain Power BI datasets, reports, and dashboards, ensuring outputs are intuitive, accurate, and fit for purpose. This includes managing data refreshes, optimising performance, applying appropriate security and access controls, and ensuring reports are supported by clear documentation.
Working closely with clinical, operational, and corporate stakeholders, the postholder will take responsibility for gathering and interpreting complex information requirements, translating these into technical BI solutions. This will require the ability to explain data and reporting concepts clearly to non-technical audiences and to manage competing priorities effectively.
A key aspect of the role is ensuring the quality and integrity of data used for reporting. The postholder will actively identify data quality issues, work with source system owners and data quality teams to resolve them, and implement validation and reconciliation processes to ensure confidence in reported information.
The postholder will support the delivery of national and local reporting requirements, ensuring that definitions, business rules, and methodologies are correctly applied and consistently used. They will contribute to testing, validation, and peer review processes to ensure BI solutions meet agreed standards before release.
As a senior member of the BI team, the postholder will provide technical advice and guidance to colleagues, contribute to the development of BI standards and best practice, and support continuous improvement across reporting and analytics. The role requires adherence to information governance, data protection, and security policies at all times, ensuring that sensitive information is handled appropriately.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Educated to degree level in computer or information science
- Educated to Masters level or equivalent level of experience of working at
- a senior level in specialist area
- Microsoft Data Platform Certifications
Experience
- In depth knowledge of data warehousing approaches and the technical
- functionality and underlying technology required to achieve these
- Evidence of achievement within a technical delivery function
- Implementation of data warehouse solution
- Experience of Business Intelligence and visualisation solutions
- Acute Trust NHS Experience
