PACS Technical Support worker
Job summary
The post holder will support the effective operation of the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), Radiology Information Systems (RIS/CRIS) and associated digital imaging workflows across The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust. The role includes daily system checks, quality control tasks, resolving data mismatches, supporting AI workflow monitoring, and supporting image transfer for the Image Exchange Portal (IEP). The post holder will also contribute to wider Radiology administrative functions such as booking, enquiries handling, and supporting service improvement projects.
Main duties of the job
Works as part of the multidisciplinary Radiology admin and PACS team. Provides essential technical/administrative support to the digital imaging service. Interacts with Radiologists, Radiographers, Clinicians, Nurses, MDT teams, external Trusts and IT Services. Handles non-clinical enquiries and patient communications to support efficient service delivery. Contributes to departmental service improvement initiatives.

Duties and responsibilities
PACS / Imaging IT Duties
- Perform daily PACS QC tasks, including EI QC Tasks, missing images checks, autoreport failures and QC flag monitoring.
- Monitor and resolve ASF AI processing errors, escalating to the PACS Manager when required.
- Monitor unprocessed worklists, sending timely reminders to clinical teams.
- Conduct routine “iPad walkaround” device checks, ensuring departmental mobile devices are functional and compliant.
- Support users with PACS access issues, login problems and local troubleshooting under supervision.
- Ensure imaging studies are correctly assigned, merged or split as needed according to Trust and IR(ME)R documentation standards.
- Respond to internal PACS queries from Radiographers, Clinicians, MDT Coordinators and ward areas.
IEP & Image Transfer
- Process incoming IEP image transfers, ensuring correct patient matching and filing into CRIS/PACS.
- Support the targeted lung health checks (TLHC) pathway by accurately filing imported lung CT studies.
- Assist with all import/export tasks, ensuring adherence to Trust protocols and data protection requirements.
- Liaise with external trusts and suppliers to troubleshoot failed transfers or incorrect data.
Radiology Booking and Access Support
- Support the Radiology access and booking team with appointment queries.
- Provide cover for general Radiology administration when needed, including reception, phones and email management.
- Assist in coordinating appointments and responding to patient queries with professionalism and empathy.
- Support escalation of patient complaints or concerns to the appropriate senior staff member.
Data Quality & Information Governance
- Ensure high standards of data entry, accuracy and confidentiality across all digital systems.
- Report data errors, mismatches or clinical risk issues to the PACS Manager promptly.
- Support compliance with IR(ME)R, Caldicott Principles and GDPR across all imaging workflows.
Service Improvement
- Contribute to Radiology digital improvement projects and workflow optimisation initiatives.
- Provide feedback on system performance and suggest practical improvements.
- Participate in the testing and rollout of PACS/RIS upgrades, patches and new system functionality.
Training & Support
- Assist with the onboarding and basic training of new users on PACS and related systems.
- Provide firstline support to clinical staff on image retrieval, viewing tools and basic IT functions.
- Maintain uptodate knowledge of imaging pathways and departmental processes.
General Responsibilities
- Work flexibly across the Radiology Department, supporting colleagues as required.
- Adhere to Trust values, policies and mandatory training requirements.
- Undertake any other duties that may be reasonably requested within the scope of the role.

Person Specification
Qualifications
- GCSE English & Maths (or equivalent)
- Recognised IT qualification (ECDL / equivalent)
- Evidence of continued professional development
Experience
- Administrative experience in a busy environment
- Data entry and data quality experience
- Experience using clinical or patient systems
- Previous Radiology or NHS experience
