Senior EPMA Nurse

Job summary

This role supports the safe and effective delivery of patient care by leading and developing the Trusts electronic prescribing and medicines administration (EPMA) systems within the Pharmacy and digital teams. Working closely with pharmacists, clinical staff and IT specialists, the post holder will play a key role in implementing, optimising and supporting ePrescribing systems. By acting as a key link between nursing, pharmacy and digital teams, the role contributes to the Trusts wider digital transformation agenda, enhancing patient safety, improving service efficiency and supporting high-quality, patient-centred care across the organisation.

Main duties of the job

Provide day-to-day support for the Trusts electronic prescribing and medicines administration (EPMA) systems, including front-line user support and participation in on-call cover. Support the implementation, configuration and optimisation of EPMA systems. Work closely with EPMA pharmacists and deputise where required, ensuring continuity of service and effective system management. Deliver training and education to clinical staff to ensure safe and effective use of ePrescribing systems. Provide expert clinical input into the design, build and validation of treatment protocols within the EPMA systems. Monitor, investigate and support the management of medication-related incidents, using EPMA data and functionality to improve patient safety. Gather user feedback and work with multidisciplinary teams to continuously improve system functionality and clinical workflows. Test system upgrades and changes, identifying and escalating any potential risks to patient safety. Act as a key liaison between nursing, pharmacy, digital teams and external system suppliers. Lead and support clinical audits, maintain documentation and ensure EPMA-related policies and procedures are up to date. Maintain issue, risk and incident logs and contribute to measuring and reporting system benefits. Represent the nursing perspective in EPMA-related projects, meetings and wider digital initiatives across the Trust.

The post holder will play a central role in supporting the maintenance and optimisation of the Trust’s electronic prescribing and medicines administration (EPMA) systems, working as part of the Pharmacy and wider digital teams. They will be responsible for ensuring that EPMA systems are used safely, effectively and to their full potential to improve patient care, medication safety and clinical workflows.

The role requires a high level of clinical expertise combined with specialist digital and systems knowledge.

A key responsibility will be the design, configuration and validation of EPMA system content, including treatment protocols and order sets. The post holder will use their clinical expertise to ensure that systems are aligned with best practice and support safe prescribing and administration of medicines. They will also be involved in testing system upgrades and changes, identifying and escalating any risks to patient safety before implementation.

Acting as a key link between nursing, pharmacy and digital teams, the post holder will represent the nursing perspective in EPMA-related projects and forums, both internally and externally. They will be expected to work autonomously, manage competing priorities and contribute to the Trust’s wider digital transformation agenda, supporting improvements in digital maturity and patient-centred care.

The role requires flexibility, strong organisational and communication skills, and the ability to work across different clinical areas and, where required, multiple sites. The post holder must demonstrate leadership, initiative and a commitment to continuous improvement, ensuring high standards are maintained at all times.

Qualifications

Essential
  • Current NMC registration
  • Degree level qualification
  • Relevant digital clinical experience at band 6/7 or equivalent
Desirable
  • Managerial/leadership qualifications or can be demonstrated through experience

  • Significant post registration hospital experience
  • Experience and understanding of electronic prescribing and medicines administration processes and personnel
  • Experience of delivering training to individuals and to groups
  • Conducted own audit/research project
  • Experience of implementing and leading change
  • Experience of using ePrescribing systems

  • Experience of managing ePrescribing systems
  • Experience of working in clinical IT projects
