Medical Laboratory Assistant
Job summary
The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is a specialist oncology centre split across three sites: two in central London and the other in Sutton, Surrey. We now have a 10 month fixed term vacancy for an enthusiastic and experienced Medical Laboratory Assistant to work in the Blood Sciences department in Chelsea. The department processes approximately 200 000 samples per year.
Applications are invited for an experienced Medical Laboratory Assistant on our Chelsea site to support our Blood Sciences service. As a member of the departmental team, you will be involved in receiving samples into the Laboratory IT system, handling referral work and liaising with service users. The role also involves performing the analysis of samples, routine maintenance and reagent management tasks throughout the Biochemistry, Haematology and Blood Transfusion laboratories.
The MLA team supports the laboratory service between the hours of 08:00 and 20:00, 7 days per week on a rota basis.
Applicants should have experience working in a routine healthcare laboratory and be able to demonstrate excellent team working. The department carries full ISO15189 Accreditation. CPD is actively encouraged.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will perform basic tasks to support the Biomedical Scientists within the Blood Sciences laboratories in accordance with Standard Operational Procedures (SOPs). The post holder will organise and receive samples ensuring they are processed in a timely manner, including samples analysed on site and referred to other laboratories.

To assist with the receipt and processing of biological samples in accordance with SOPs.
Undertake sample reception and data entry with a high level of accuracy
Perform analysis of biological samples on basic analytical instrumentation
Collection and delivery of transport bags and consumables to and from bus / taxi.
Person Specification
Education/Qualifications
- Good general education. GCSE grade C or higher in English and Maths. A level or equivalent relevant experience.
- ECDL or equivalent
- BSc (Hons) or equivalent qualification
Experience
- Previous experience in a laboratory role
- Experience of MS Excel and MS Word, including creating and using spreadsheets
Skills Abilities/knowledge
- Ability to write clearly and concisely
- Able to work to deadlines
- Ability to express themselves clearly and communicate information
- Attention to detail
Experience
- Experience of working in a Blood Sciences department or NHS organisation
- Able to perform basic training
