Research Project Manager
Job summary
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Research Project Manager to leaddelivery of the NIHR i4i (Invention for Innovation) Product Development Awardproject:
"HOLO-AIM: Holographic surgical guidance using Artificial Intelligence and Mixed Reality for safer and more efficient surgery."
This flagship translational collaboration between The Royal Marsden Hospital,Imperial College London, and industry partner Holocare will develop andclinically validate an AI-powered, mixed-reality surgical-guidance platformintegrating real-time imaging, computer vision, and workflow tools to improvesurgical precision and patient safety.
This is a hybrid role, with three days per week on site at our Chelsea campus andflexibility for remote working. Occasional travel to our Sutton site or partnerinstitutions may be required.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will provide strategic and operational leadership to ensure theproject is delivered to time, scope, and budget. They will coordinate activity acrossacademic, clinical, and industry partners and manage risk, governance, andreporting to meet NIHR requirements.
Key responsibilities include:? Coordinating delivery, progress monitoring, and risk management across allwork packages.? Supporting governance, contracts, and IP /data management with partnerresearch offices and legal teams.? Overseeing project finances and NIHR-compliant reporting (c. £2 millionbudget).? Engaging stakeholders and PPIE partners to ensure patient perspectivesinform design and evaluation.? Planning dissemination and stakeholder-engagement activities to maximiseproject impact.? Contributing to preparation of future translational research proposals to majorUK and international funders (e.g. NIHR, MRC, Innovate UK, UKRI, HorizonEurope, European Innovation Council).Strong project-management experience in healthcare, digital health, AI ormedical-device innovation is essential.

Project management
- Take responsibility for the administrative aspects of project management and governance to enableappropriate oversight, including scheduling, organising meetings.
- Lead maintenance of accurate project records, including drafting meeting agendas/notes, trackingproject progress against work plans and attribution of responsibilities.
- Support the negotiation and monitoring of contracts and budgets with collaborating partners.
- Collate and maintain a risk register and report to appropriate committees on their status.
- Maintain financial records that enables monitoring of project expenditure against budget (c.£2M)
Communication
- Be the primary operational point of contact i.e. liaising with finance, operations, legal, technologytransfer and academic staff at the participating universities and NHS Trusts, ensuring all partieshave project information necessary to deliver their respective functions.
- Develop and oversee robust communication between the collaborators and The RM. This willinclude monitoring outputs from collaborating organisations to ensure appropriate accrediting andacknowledgment of the research funders, RM and its investigators.
- Develop and maintain relationships with external and internal groups to ensure that researchactivity is promoted with relevant stakeholders.
- Liaise with funder secretariat on an as needs basis to ensure compliance with contractualobligations. This may include supporting the negotiation of revisions to planned work andresources.
Person Specification
Education/Qualifications
- Degree qualification in a relevant subject (medical, biological, or health sciences) or equivalent experience in clinical / health research.
- Project-management qualification (e.g. PRINCE2) or equivalent experience managing research or innovation projects in the NHS or HEI sector.
- Higher degree qualification (e.g. MSc or PhD) in a relevant subject, preferably in the medical or biological sciences
Experience
- Proven experience delivering multi-partner research or innovation projects, ideally involving medical devices, AI or digital-health technologies.
- Experience in operational leadership, budget monitoring, and funder reporting.
- Demonstrated ability to manage governance, contracts, and risk registers.
- Excellent stakeholder-management and communication skills across academic, NHS and industry settings.
- Experience of inputting to research funding applications with the aim of developing/translating technologies into patient benefit
- Experience of designing and delivering training
