Research EPR Practitioner

Job summary

Do you have experience in using clinical IT systems? Are you an excellent communicator? Can you work with staff to learn new skills and support their learning? Are you interested in how we can use IT to improve access to research and inform future treatments and care? If you've answered yes, the Research EPR Practitioner role could be for you!

We are seeking a curious and IT-proficient individual to support our clinical research teams and work closely with the OneDevon electronic patient record (EPR) team to ensure a standardised approach to using the EPR to identify and screen patients that are eligible for clinical trials, maximising opportunities for recruitment into research studies.

The OneDevon EPR initiative is a unique collaboration between Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust (TSDFT), Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (RDUH) and University Hospital Plymouth NHS Trust (UHPT) using the Epic system to create a single EPR. Having been introduced into RDUH in 2020, Epic is being rolled out across TSDFT and UHPT throughout 2026.

This is a fixed term or secondment opportunity with an end date as March 31st, 2028

Main duties of the job

As a Research EPR Practitioner you will play an integral part in maximising the Epic EPR functionality to identify, screen and recruit eligible participants into research trials within each organisation.

A key element of the role will be supporting staff across Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust and University Hospitals Plymouth to understand and use new and existing Epic research tools effectively; contributing to training, standard operating procedure development, and ongoing process improvement. The post holder will monitor the effectiveness of implemented solutions, identify further optimisation opportunities, and escalate complex system or governance issues to the appropriate EPR or research leadership.

This post holder will work in partnership with the EPR team to design systems that will support us to both increase the number of patients being recruited into clinical trials and the speed of recruitment. This will help us to meet the national 30-day target for recruiting the first patient into a study once it has opened which is a key part of the overall 150-day set up metric.
