Role Title: Senior Software Engineer
Day Rate: Up to £425 per day inside IR35
Clearance Required: SC Eligible
Contract Length: Initial 3 months
Start Date: ASAP
Manchester-based role Hybrid working with 1 day per week on-site
An experienced Senior Software Engineer is required to support the delivery of a central government compensation service. This role is primarily backend-focused, with some frontend responsibilities, and requires strong Java expertise within a modern microservices architecture.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services
- Build and enhance microservices deployed via containerisation
- Contribute to frontend components where required using lightweight frameworks
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams in an Agile environment
- Ensure code quality through best practices, testing, and peer reviews
- Support continuous improvement of engineering standards and delivery processes
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong experience with Java and Spring Boot
- Proven experience building and maintaining microservices architectures
- Experience with Docker and containerised deployments
- Solid understanding of backend system design and API development
- Working knowledge of JavaScript and Node.js
- Experience building simple web frontends using templating tools such as NunJucks
- Familiarity with GDS design standards
- Experience working in Agile delivery environments
Desirable Skills
- Experience delivering services within central government or highly regulated environments
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
- Exposure to cloud-based infrastructure (e.g. AWS, Azure, or GCP)
