Decision Support Analyst

United Utilities is strengthening its risk-based approach to long-term asset investment, and this is an opportunity to join the team shaping that future. Our Asset Health Strategy team develops and supports the systems, insight and capability that underpin long-term asset health planning across water, wastewater and bioresources.

We work with well-established industry tools such as PIONEER alongside new capabilities in Copperleaf and major data platforms including Exasol, Databricks, Power BI and ArcGIS Online. As we continue to enhance our asset planning approach, we’re looking for a Decision Support Analyst who enjoys working with data, solving problems and producing insight that supports better outcomes for our customers and the environment.

About the Role

As a Decision Support Analyst, you will support our asset investment and risk planning processes by gathering, organising and analysing large datasets. Your work will help the business understand asset performance, deterioration and risk. You’ll also contribute to developing new system functionality, dashboards and reporting tools; working with users to prepare, cleanse and interpret the data behind them.

This role is ideal for someone highly numerate, comfortable with complex datasets and keen to grow their analytical, technical and asset management skills. Experience in asset management, risk modelling or water industry processes is desirable, but if you meet the essential skills, your curiosity, willingness to learn and structured, self-directed approach are even more important to succeeding in this role.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide high-quality analysis and reporting from asset management systems.
  • Gather, prepare and interpret large datasets to support asset risk and investment planning.
  • Support the specification, configuration, testing and rollout of new dashboards, reports and system functionality.
  • Present findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Help ensure asset risk and prioritisation systems align with wider corporate systems.
  • Serve as an approachable point of contact for system users.
  • Contribute to improvements in predictive modelling, asset health monitoring and long-term strategic planning.
Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Strong numerical ability and confidence working with large, complex datasets.
  • Well-developed analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to translate technical information into clear, understandable insight.
  • Experience supporting colleagues in using new tools, systems or processes.
  • Structured, organised and self-directed approach to managing multiple priorities.
  • Knowledge of database design and use, ideally including some SQL.
  • Awareness of financial, environmental and sustainability drivers in the water industry.
  • Skills in Power BI, Python, FME, Databricks or other data engineering/visualisation tools.

Desirable

  • Understanding of water, wastewater or bioresources assets, or asset management principles.
  • Experience with asset deterioration or risk modelling techniques.
  • Familiarity with the water industry regulatory framework (e.g., Ofwat).
  • Experience with geospatial analysis or tools such as ArcGIS.

Personal attributes

Alongside technical skills, we’re looking for someone who brings the right mindset to working in a data-driven, collaborative environment. This role sits at the heart of long-term asset planning, so clear thinking, strong communication and an organised approach are essential.

You will be:

  • Curious, analytical and eager to understand how assets behave over time.
  • Comfortable working independently and taking ownership of tasks.
  • Structured and methodical in your approach to data and problem-solving.
  • A clear, confident communicator with the ability to engage at all levels.
  • Motivated to learn, grow and contribute to a team driving real improvement.
Why Join United Utilities?

You’ll be part of a team leading the evolution of investment decision-making within the water industry. You’ll work with modern tools, interesting data and supportive colleagues, contributing to decisions that shape the long-term resilience of essential services. Benefits
