Clinical Scientist (Medical Physicist)

Job summary

This is a new post created due to significant expansion of trial participation. In the first instance this is fixed term (24 months) to assess viability of posts funded by research trials.

As a Clinical Scientist in the Institute of Nuclear Medicine, you will contribute to the work of an established team of ten clinical scientists who provide critical scientific and technical support to the work of this leading department. The team currently includes four other Band 7 NM clinical scientists and three Band 8a leads, as well as 3 physics assistants. You will work very closely with these colleagues, who alongside the Head of NM Physics, Deputy Head of NM Physics and Principal Physicist in molecular radiotherapy, will be able to support you to quickly become established in this role. You will be expected to participate in the very wide range of clinical and research and development activities of the department. Full training will be provided on both the equipment support rota and the radionuclide therapy support rota, and time off rota will be available for service development projects.

Main duties of the job

Main duties as follows:

o To contribute to the work of the group in delivering a high standard of scientific and technical support to the clinical and research activities of the Institute. o To perform routine clinical procedures and undertake clinical projects.o To provide Duty Physicist cover to the Clinical Nuclear Medicine Service.o To provide Duty Therapy Physicist cover to the Molecular Radiotherapy (MRT) Service for both the INM and Radiotherapy MRT rotas.o To provide radiation safety and radiation protection supporto To participate in the development and introduction of new clinical protocols and procedures.o To contribute to audit activities within the departmento To participate in the conduct of research and development projects.o To give advice, training and practical support on the correct operation and quality assurance of a range of nuclear medicine, PET/CT and PET/MR instrumentation and computer systems.o To undertake teaching and lecturing as required, and in the training, education and supervision of local and visiting staff; contributing to their continuing education and to the development of their competencies

Person Specification

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential
  • Good first degree in a Physical Science or equivalent
  • Master's degree in medical and radiation physics
  • STP training completion or IPEM Training Exit Certificate or equivalent
  • State Registered Clinical Scientist
Desirable
  • Corporate Membership of Professional Institute or eligible
  • Membership of National or International Professional Association
  • PhD in a relevant area

Experience

Essential
  • Capability consistent with relevant post-graduate exposure to the duties of this post, with some experience in nuclear medicine.
  • An understanding of : oThe physics of nuclear medicine, and the principles of operation of radiation detectors. oCurrent diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine procedures. oThe operation of current nuclear medicine SPECT/CT and PET/CT equipment and image processing workstations. oEquipment calibration, quality assurance and performance assessment. oThe principles and practice of internal radiation dosimetry, sufficient to perform estimates of the patient dose arising from non-standard procedures. oCurrent methodologies for the processing and analysis of nuclear medicine, SPECT, PET and CT image data. Windows operating system and PC applications software including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, web browsers, mail tools.
Desirable
  • Capability consistent with significant relevant post-graduate experience of the duties of this post, including that typical of some exposure in nuclear medicine.
  • An understanding of : oStatistical methods appropriate for analysis of nuclear medicine data. oTechniques for image fusion and registration. oTechniques for kinetic modelling. oMonte Carlo modelling. oWindows/Linux/Unix operating systems. oClinical applications software, VBasic, C/C++, Matlab, scripting languages, website development, databases. oRadiation safety legislation and practice, the safe use of unsealed radioactive materials. oClinical governance and audit, NHS research strategy etc.
  • The presentation of scientific findings at conferences and seminars, and their publication in peer-reviewed literature.
