Job summary

As a Clinical Terminologist, you will play a key role in not only setting up an infrastructure that supports the ongoing terminology and SNOMED mapping needs of the organisation but working with clinical and technical teams to ensure that clinical terms, codes and mapping algorithms directly align with clinical practice.

This will include supporting several key projects geared around key data set requirements, clinical research domains and SNOMED upgrades. In turn this work will involve engaging with various stakeholders across the Trust to ensure the integrity of data flows and support the Trust in meeting its local and statutory reporting requirements.

This is a 6-month fixed term position underpinned by key outcomes and deliverables working very closely with the EPIC and clinical coding team to ensure a collaborative and joined up approach to system developments and front-end data capture.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience in not only clinical coding but more specifically within clinical terminology and Snomed mapping works and projects.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Terminologist will be responsible for working with clinical and technical teams, leading on terminology mapping works and projects including the ensuing system upgrade to OPCS 4.11, Snomed upgrade, clinical research works and facilitating for core minimum data set requirements.

The ability to work directly with clinical teams in the capture of clinical activity, align this with classification and terminology flows and work collaboratively with the coding and EPIC team regarding system build and developments is pivotal.

In turn this role will be responsible for supporting a series of time critical projects in an intuitive and highly organised way, successfully managing stakeholder expectations and supporting the hospital in meeting local and national mandates.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential
  • Masters degree or above in Medical Science, Health Informatics, Healthcare Technology disciplines
  • Expert working knowledge of SNOMED CT
  • Expert working knowledge of LOINC
  • In-depth knowledge of Epic build/configuration concepts across all modules
  • Completion of SNOMED CT Implementation Course by SNOMED International
  • Completion of SNOMED CT for data analysts Course by SNOMED International
  • Thorough understanding and working knowledge of UCUM
  • Good SQL skills to interrogate Clarity and Caboodle data warehouse and run analytics
  • Knowledge of FHIR, Smart-on-FHIR and interoperability
  • Understanding R programming language
  • Working knowledge of OMOP data model and Athena terminology system
  • Proficiency in Ontoserver and Shrimp Browser, able to navigate through functions e.g. subsets, attributes using ECL (Expression Constraint Language)
Desirable
  • Good Python skills and able to produce ICD and OPCS mapped codes against Epic import file format, by interrogating NHS England's SNOMED release file contents
  • Working knowledge of ICD-10, OPCS and HRGs
  • Project management certificate, e.g. PRINCE2

Experience

Essential
  • Experience in leading SNOMED CT implementation in an EHR system at a (minimal) district general hospital
  • Experience in leading LOINC implementation in an EHR/LIM system at a (minimal) district general hospital
  • Experience in application of OMOP data model and Athena terminology against national/international research projects
  • Having a vision and be able to articulate that vision to the peers and colleagues
  • Track record of successful delivery in large-scale projects/programs at a Trust-wide level
  • Working with and directly influencing clinicians
  • Experience in leading major changes in challenging organisational environments.
  • Experience in EHR system configuration/Build
  • Previous experience of working within a complex cultural environment
  • Mentor junior staff, e.g. data scientists, junior doctors, medical students
