Applicants are invited to apply for the post of Locum Consultant Neurologist to join the Movement Disorders team at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square.The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery provides tertiary level care in a wide spectrum of neurological and neurosurgical disease, with a regional, national and international referral base.

The hospital is co-located with the Institute of Neurology in Queen Square, London WC1. These institutions share the common aim of promoting research, clinical care and teaching in neuroscience and its allied scientific and clinical disciplines.

The post holder must be committed to high quality patient care, innovative service models, delivery of performance targets, advancement of knowledge through research and excellence in education/training.

Main duties of the job

The main duty of the role is to deliver specialist care for patients with dystonia and other hyperkinetic movement disorders. This will involve delivering no more than one dystonia / Botulinum toxin clinic per week, and therefore the postholder must be experienced in treating patients with Botulinum toxin.

The appointee will have an overriding duty of care to patients and are expected to comply fully with best practice standards, including Trust policies for personal and patient safety and clinical governance. This will include participating in clinical audit and review of outcomes, working towards achievement of national and local performance management targets, complying with risk management policies, and participating in the consultant appraisal process.

The post-holder is expected to take an active role in clinical governance activities including (but not restricted to) clinical audit, morbidity and mortality, incident reporting, review of complaints, risk management and Evidence-Based Practice.

Person Specification

Professional Qualifications

Essential
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council and acceptance on the GMC Specialist Register
  • MRCP(UK) or an equivalent qualification.
  • CCST in Neurology or within 6 months of accreditation
Desirable
  • PhD or MD or equivalent specialist training

Clinical Experience & Knowledge

Essential
  • Knowledge of evidence informed practice Comprehensive and detailed knowledge of neurological disorders
  • Clinical expertise in movement disorders and botulinum toxin treatment.
Desirable
  • Demonstrates breadth of experience and awareness in and outside specialty
  • Experience with setting up and leading a multidisciplinary team

Clinical Skills

Essential
  • Demonstrable ability to run an effective clinical service for people with movement disorders
Desirable
  • Demonstrate an ability to identify and organise the specific clinical investigations and onward referrals relevant to the post

Clinical Governance Management & IT

Essential
  • Evidence of having worked and being able to communicate within an Interdisciplinary / multispecialty service with appropriate levels of communication through direct discussions with team members, MDT meetings, and presentations to the team
  • Involvement in and understanding of the Clinical Governance.
  • Experience of audit and willingness to institute audit exercises.
Desirable
  • Evidence of being able to engage and communicate at a National and International level
  • Able to engage and work with management as appropriate for a consultant that wishes to become an active member of the Trust

Teaching and Research

Essential
  • Ability and commitment to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate doctors in training.
  • Proven ability and commitment to carry out high quality research, leading to publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Understanding of and proven ability to apply research findings in a clinical/organisational context.
  • Knowledge of Research ethics and committed to incorporating the highest standards of research governance.
Desirable
  • Teaching on formal educational courses.
  • Evidence of organisational ability: e.g. organising and directing courses, educational programmes etc.
