We are recruiting a Senior Clinical Scientist to join our CSC team within the Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering at UCLH - a leading department at the forefront of digital research and innovation.
We are looking for a state registered Clinical Scientist, but we welcome applicants with appropriate experience who could achieve registration via the equivalence route within 3 years.
You'll be joining us at a pivotal time. Our service is evolving to meet the growing demand for digital and data driven healthcare, and this senior role is key to driving that transformation. You will help lead and deliver a full range of scientific computing services; from bespoke clinical systems and regulated medical device software to research computing, data science, automation, and interoperability.

Main duties of the job
You will work closely with the Head and Deputy Head of Clinical Scientific Computing, as well as clinical scientists, analysts and wider colleagues across Medical Physics. You will also build strong and productive working relationships with clinicians, scientists, clinical managers, UCLH Digital Healthcare Technology staff, and their commercial partners.
We provide major scientific computing support for Radiotherapy, Proton Beam Therapy, Nuclear Medicine, Sterile Services, Neurophysiology and Women's Health, alongside a wide range of other clinical areas. You will be part of a specialist team delivering some on call and extended hours support to Radiotherapy and Proton Beam Therapy.
You will use your organisational skills to manage projects involving multiple clinical, commercial and technical stakeholders, while applying your technical and scientific expertise, along with your understanding of regulatory requirements, risk management and quality management, to evaluate, specify, implement and support clinical systems.
We have close links with UCL and are accredited by the National School of Healthcare Science (NSHCS) to host and support trainees in Clinical Scientific Computing. We want you to play an active role in research, development and innovation, and we will support you to develop your strengths and interests, whether these are in programming, data science, AI or other areas of clinical scientific computing.

Person Specification
Knowledge and Qualifications
- 1st or 2nd class honours degree in computer science, a physical science, engineering, or equivalent
- PhD or equivalent (MSc / MEng with additional specialist training or research experience) in a relevant field, or an equivalent level of knowledge obtained through a combination of qualifications and experience
- State Registration as a Clinical Scientist / able to register within 3 years of appointment
- Corporate Membership of relevant professional institutes (eg IPEM, IET)
- Evidence of training and development in Leadership & Management
Scientific & Technical
- Broad knowledge across the full range of working procedures and practices in clinical scientific computing including relevant legislation, national and international standards, NHS policy, and professional and other guidelines
- Advanced knowledge of software engineering best practices (including the software development life cycle, issue tracking, testing, documentation, and version control with Git) that enable the delivery of reliable, sustainable and trustworthy outputs
- Advanced knowledge of statistics and mathematics applied to acquiring reliable insight from data
- Advanced knowledge of computer hardware and software at both operating system and application level and of medical device IT systems
- Broad knowledge of architecture, configuration, security and performance management of networks using TCP/IP protocols
- Broad knowledge of security issues associated with computer systems within the Trust, NHS and health sector, and the measures required to address these
- Broad knowledge of data management, including storage, archive, backup and data publication technologies
- Broad knowledge of medical devices and of other areas of medical physics and clinical engineering practice and procedure
Clinical
- Knowledge of clinical practice and the implications for clinical scientific computing

Experience
- Significant experience of a scientific healthcare environment
- Experience of managing computer operating systems including Linux and Windows
- Experience of a wide variety of computing systems and application packages
- Experience of managing IT systems in a clinical environment
- Experience of managing IT projects
- Experience with the core tools of data science and analytics, in a programmatic framework such as Python
- Experience with common approaches in machine learning
- Experience with the authorship, development, testing and maintenance of software for clinical research & development. This might include (but is not limited to) software supporting data processing and statistical analysis, image analysis tools, front- and back-end web development, mobile apps, high-performance simulation software, or mathematical software
- Experience with at least one programming language used for research (such as Python) at a level and breadth commensurate with seniority
- Experience in the supervision of research and development work
- Experience of holding grants and supervising research workers
Management & Leadership
- Significant experience of providing services in a scientific healthcare environment
- Experience of supervising junior staff and trainees
