Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for the appointment of a Band 7 Digital Midwife to join the Maternity Services team at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.
The Maternity Service at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is highly digitised, with minimal reliance on paper documentation within clinical areas. The digital infrastructure includes a comprehensive Electronic Maternity Patient Record (EMPR), supporting a fully integrated approach to care.
The service has established a clear strategic direction to maximise the effective and efficient use of digital technologies and information systems. This is aimed at enhancing care quality, improving patient safety, and driving operational efficiencies.
The post-holder will play a key leadership role in supporting digital innovation within the maternity service. Acting as both a digital champion and a professional representative of the midwifery workforce, the individual will ensure that digital solutions align with clinical standards and support safe, evidence-based practice.
A core responsibility will be to support the maintenance, ongoing development, and implementation of the maternity record system and associated information management and technology (IM&T) systems, ensuring they continue to meet the evolving needs of the service.
Main duties of the job
Leading and supporting the development, maintenance, and implementation of the maternity record and related IM&T (Information Management and Technology) systems.
Overseeing progress against digital transformation plans and ensuring alignment with national and local priorities.
Developing a networked approach to enable shared learning and collaboration across maternity services.
Supporting NHSX's five missions, including reducing the burden on staff, empowering patients with digital tools, improving safety, and enhancing productivity.
The post-holder will act as an autonomous and accountable practitioner, working both independently and collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team. They will be a visible presence within clinical areas, working alongside midwives and supporting them in day-to-day practice to ensure digital solutions are effective, user-friendly, and aligned with clinical needs.

Qualifications
- * Registered midwife
Experience
- * Experience of working with clinical information systems
- * Understanding of Information Governance and confidentiality
- * In depth understanding of the national digital agenda and including the National Maternity review and Safer Maternity Care agenda
- * Comprehensive knowledge of the NHS targets and priorities
- * Knowledge of research/audit in maternity services
- * Understanding of the Maternity Services Data Set (MSDS) and ability to apply the findings to improve service delivery
- * Significant post registration experience, including experience of working in a relevant clinical speciality
- * Experience of assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for patients/service users/staff demonstrating knowledge of specific needs
- * Experience of working in a MDT and across organisational and professional boundaries
