Locum Consultant โ€“ special interest in Cardiac Anaesthesia

Job summary

We are excited to invite applications for a Consultant Anaesthetist specialising in the provision of Cardiac Anaesthesia and Cardiac Critical Care, at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB). There is potential for this post to be considered as single speciality (anaesthetics).

The successful applicant will join 11 other Consultant Anaesthetists working within Cardiac surgical services providing cover for conventional cardiac surgery, aortic surgery, grown up congenital heart surgery (GUCH), Heart and Lung transplantation with mechanical circulatory support as part of the transplantation programme. The post holder will also be expected to provide sessions for interventional cardiology procedures.

Applicant must have passed or be working toward sitting a recognised TOE exam and preferably already hold or be working towards, full TOE accreditation.

Experience of heart and lung transplantation and of mechanical cardiac support is desirable and appointees will be supported and developed to be able to practise in this area independently.

The appointees will be expected to participate in audit, medical education, MDT, Mortality and Morbidity meetings and a dynamic Real Time clinical governance programme.

Main duties of the job

This post will be part of a team of Consultants that work within a prospective cover rota across cardiac anaesthesia and cardiac critical care. The applicant must be able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

The appointee will be expected to participate in the Divisional and Departmental audit programme as well as in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

An applicant who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification to the job content will be discussed with the Trust on a personal basis in consultation with consultant colleagues.

The successful candidate is expected to be aware of local policies and procedures and comply with the standing orders and standing financial instructions of the Trust. In particular, where the consultant manages employees of the Trust, he/she will be expected to observe the local employment and personnel policies and procedures.

Job responsibilities

The cardiac surgery programme provides about 600 operations per year but is looking to expand that to 1200 per annum.

Cardiac theatres at QEHB consist of three modern, custom-built suites providing elective and emergency anaesthesia across a whole range of adult cardiac surgery including device support for heart failure and heart and lung transplantation. The department also has well established adult congenital heart disease surgery, major aortic surgery, carcinoid heart disease surgery and Cath lab based intervention and diagnostic services.

Anaesthesia is provided with frequently upgraded and advance organ monitoring equipment and is supported by closely located modern critical care unit.

The on-calls are 1 in 7 and are busy with conventional and transplant emergencies. We are looking to support these by appointing cardiac fellows.

The critical care unit is supported by two resident staff, one of which is a cardiac trained advanced critical care practitioner (ACCP)

Qualifications

Essential
  • *GMC Registration
  • *Inclusion on Specialist Registrar or, if in training eligible for inclusion on the Register within 6 months
  • *FRCA or equivalent
