Job summary
Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Services (CWPS) offer a range of diagnostics tests across a number of departments. The Cellular Pathology service receives approximately 56,000 cases per year across 3 NHS Trusts; University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, George Eliot NHS Trust and South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust.
The Histology laboratories are based at University Hospital Coventry and Warwick Hospital. It is an exciting time to join the department as we are currently implementing new laboratory equipment. We have also recently implemented the Sectra Digital Pathology solution and brand new Hamamatsu scanners, and will be upgrading the Pathology LIMS system in 2026.
CWPS have been given funding for extra laboratory workforce to support in meeting the increasing demand for Histology case processing and Cancer Services across the Trusts. We are looking for a Biomedical Scientist to join our team.
The successful applicant will have the IBMS registration portfolio and be HCPC registered.

Salary will reflect this trainee status when starting the position (Annex 21).

Main duties of the job
You must be able to support the provision of a full histopathology diagnostic service, which will include BMS cut-up, embedding, microtomy, H&E staining, special stains, and immunohistochemistry. The successful candidate must demonstrate commitment to improvements to quality and standards within their area of work.The laboratory operates a full rotation system through all sections. Training and encouragement is provided for CPD and other personal development.

Job responsibilities
Duties of the role:
- Perform daily routine and specialised diagnostic services on patient and environmental samples containing potentially infectious material. This will be done on a rotational basis using manual and automated techniques to exacting medical and scientific standards according to standard operating procedures
- Perform daily interpretation of diagnostic investigations. Know how to proceed in the event of technical / analytical non conformity and when to inform the line manager
- Accurate and timely entry of data onto the laboratory computer system and/or automated analysers using a VDU and keyboard workstation
- As appropriate record reports for authorisation in electronic form and / or verbally to persons authorised to receive them
- Quality check outputs including maintaining necessary internal record
- Participate in external and internal quality assurance schemes and vertical and horizontal audits as directed by senior staff
- Work to meet laboratory performance targets as directed by senior staff
- Under supervision, develop and investigate new techniques as required by the changing needs of the service
- To regularly inform and discuss progress of training towards a competence portfolio, with the laboratory training officer and other senior staff as appropriate

Person Specification
Qualification/Training
- oCompleted Biomedical Science degree acceptable to the HCPC.
- oEvidence of CPD
Experience
- oEvidence of recent laboratory experience.
- oNHS laboratory experience
Knowledge
- oDemonstrate knowledge of Biomedical Science in relevant discipline.
- oKnowledge of Quality Management systems. oLaboratory Health and Safety knowledge.
Skills & Abilities
- oGood written and oral communication skills. oBe able to follow complex documents such as a standard operating procedure. oHigh level of accuracy and attention to detail. oPhysically able to carry out some manual handling. oTo be able to communicate clinical information clearly using telephone and Laboratory Information Systems. oCapability to perform laboratory tasks requiring fine manipulation dependent on discipline. oProficient in a range of IT skills.
