Clinical Technologist, Diagnostic Radiology Physics
Job summary
Radiology Physics provides clinical and non-clinical scientific and technical services in diagnostic radiology physics and the ionising radiation protection of patients, staff and the general public to the Trust and to client health care organisations throughout the region.
The group provide scientific support and advice wherever ionising radiation is used (mainly x-rays). Support is provided to Radiology departments, Breast Screening Programmes, dentists and vets both public and private organisations. The services provided include: quality assurance of radiological equipment, support for departments' own QC procedures; radiation audits; teaching and training a variety of staff groups in radiation physics and Ionising Radiation Regulations; patient dose monitoring; personal dosimetry for staff working with ionising radiation and risk assessments.

Main duties of the job
- To carry out quality assurance surveys on general plain x-ray equipment, dental x-ray equipment, mobile image intensifiers and medical image display devices.
- To assist with quality assurance surveys on highly complex diagnostic imaging equipment such as fluoroscopy, CT, mammography and other complex x-ray equipment
- To produce written reports of the routine quality assurance (QA) surveys, and to assist in producing reports on complex equipment. This involves the analysis and interpretation of the test results from the QC surveys. This may require further more complex tests / investigations if any problems are identified.Initially this analysis will be undertaken on site to advise users if equipment fails or is dangerous.More complex analysis is undertaken back at University Hospital, sometimes using bespoke software, and a formal report will be generated, along with any recommendations to the users.This report will need to communicate complex information to non-technical users, and also specific technical information to service engineers. The results should also be discussed with service users as required

Job description
Job responsibilities
- Deal with any technical queries from service users referring more complex problems to a senior member of the technical or scientific team.
- To assist with the audit and assessment of patient doses in diagnostic radiology. This complex non-routine task involves collation of data and manipulation in spreadsheets to generate reference levels.
- To assist with the arrangement of the annual calibration of test equipment and the cross calibration of radiation measurement equipment.
- To assist with the measurement of environmental radiation doses and activities in all areas. This involves mostly non-routine activities as the radiation source, nature and environment vary tremendously.
- To assist with radiation protection surveys and risk assessments in:

- all areas related to the diagnostic use of x-rays;
- all areas of radiotherapy;
- all areas related to the use of unsealed radioactive sources.

- To assist with the administration of the equipment survey programme (includes both ionising and non-ionising equipment). This involves booking surveys across the region, negotiating equipment availability with external staff and assigning staff availability.
- To assist with other administrative duties of the group.
- To assist with management of the personal radiation monitoring program. This includes issue and return of monitors, the generation of complex and detailed reports to highlight unusual or unexpected results, and participate in the initial investigation.
- To assist with the investigation of the possible overexposure of staff.
- To use x-ray equipment, radioactive sources and measurement equipment in a manner which is safe for: themselves, other staff, the general public and the equipment itself; and to leave such equipment in a state which is safe for: other staff, patients and the general public.
- Undertake and provide support for Research and Development being undertaken within the service.
- Keep relevant scientific and technical records of all work performed.

Person Specification
Qualifications
- BSc in Clinical Technology, Medical Physics or equivalent or equivalent. (An example of equivalence would be:- oNVQ level 3 or equivalent with a strong scientific bias, and ospecialist theoretical and applied training equivalent to diploma level in the safe use of ionising radiation, and oan Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine Diploma in Clinical Technology.) Eligible to join the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine's voluntary register of Clinical Technologists.
- Completion of IPEM Clinical Technologist training scheme, with specialism in Radiation Physics
Experience
- Experience of producing written reports containing appropriate comments and recommendations based on measurements made during x-ray equipment surveys. Experience working in a scientific or clinical environment dealing with non-routine tasks
- Experience of clinical technologist roles in a healthcare environment. Experience in carrying out quality assurance surveys unsupervised. Experience of quality assurances testing general x-ray equipment under supervision.
Knowledge
- Working knowledge of uses and safety of ionising and non-ionising radiation within Medical Physics. Knowledge of imaging physics to degree level or equivalent. Knowledge of legislation, national standards and professional guidance relevant to the duties of the post including the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 and the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017. Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and Access to enable analysis of survey data and production of reports.
Skills
- Able to use Excel and Word for data entry, analysis and report writing. Able to make measurements of clinical value using sophisticated testing equipment. Able to position test objects with very high accuracy, so reproducible measurements can be obtained. Able to interpret and analyse data and draw conclusions. Effective oral and written communication skills. Able to prioritise and manage own work. Able to communicate with other healthcare professionals to discuss scientific results and data.
