Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and customer-focused Pathology IT Practitioner to join the Pathology IT Team at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust.

This role is ideal for an individual with a strong interest in IT support, problem solving and service improvement who is looking to develop their career within a specialist healthcare environment. You will play a key role in supporting the systems and technology that underpin pathology services, helping to ensure the delivery of safe, effective and uninterrupted patient care.

We are looking for an organised and enthusiastic individual with:

  • Experience of supporting computer systems, hardware and software.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to resolve technical issues effectively.
  • Knowledge of Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • The ability to prioritise competing demands and work well under pressure.
  • A degree, relevant IT qualification, or equivalent experience.
  • A proactive approach and commitment to delivering high-quality support services.

Main duties of the job

As a Pathology IT Practitioner, you will:

  • Provide frontline support for pathology software, hardware and laboratory IT systems.
  • Monitor and resolve IT faults and service requests, escalating complex issues where required.
  • Support the maintenance and development of pathology systems, including electronic order communications.
  • Assist with testing, implementation and validation of system upgrades, new developments and projects.
  • Maintain accurate records of faults, downtime, system changes and user support activities.
  • Support user account management, access controls and system housekeeping.
  • Deliver training and guidance to system users across pathology and the wider healthcare community.
  • Contribute to service improvement initiatives, audits and digital transformation programmes.

Job responsibilities

  • To provide frontline diagnostic support for software and hardware problems in order to maintain continuity of service to ensure patient care at all times.
  • To support processes for all Pathology systems.
  • To support processes for the electronic Order Communications system.
  • To support IT processes and maintenance of the Pathology IT estate.
  • To support improvement of Pathology Systems and promote Service development and improvement within Pathology.
  • To support the specific technical and administrative duties in the IT section of the Department, to facilitate the smooth running of the service.
  • Provide support both by telephone and on site, to users and clinical sponsors to enable change to user profiles as required.
  • Provide a fast, friendly and efficient Call Handling Service to Trust staff and other associated agencies who are experiencing IT related problems. This post is further enhanced with support and training to enable the post holder to resolve minor and medium term issues either immediately or within a specified time period.
  • To monitor and process fault calls and IT enquiries.
  • To assist the Cellular and Micro Pathology IT Team Manager and the Pathology IT Manager with the delivery of day-to-day tasks and projects, taking ownership of work stream progress, and other elements of project support, under the supervision of the Cellular and Micro Pathology IT Team Manager or Pathology IT Manager.
  • Manages elements of projects to improve IT equipment and systems.
  • Deliver training where necessary on use of IT systems and processes.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential
  • Educated to degree or equivalent level or equivalent demonstrable experience.
  • IT qualifications, e.g.: European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) or equivalent experience.
Desirable
  • Degree in IT related subject.

Knowledge & experience

Essential
  • Previous demonstrable experience and a good understanding of computer (PC) systems, the Windows operating system, principles of software analysis and database application.
  • Demonstrable experience of writing and developing effective documentation.
  • Knowledge of the Data Protection Act
  • Practical demonstrable experience of problem solving/repair of IT hardware
  • Proven ability in using MS Office packages; Excel, Access and Outlook, with advanced skill base within Word.
Desirable
  • Demonstrable IT experience
  • Demonstrable experience in Process Mapping
  • Proven ability to source, research and collate information/data.
  • An understanding of Prince2 project principles
  • A fundamental knowledge of systems used in Pathology

  • Proven ability to work autonomously without supervision, making decisions or requesting management support as appropriate.

  • Proven ability to produce business reports and clear, succinct briefings for managers and staff
