Pathology Digital & Diagnostics Support Technician

Job summary

The post holder will be the first line of support for all pathology data quality issues. The individual will be expected to apply judgement and have a clear understanding of data quality within the NHS and experienceofworking with NHS information systems. The role demands significant initiative,flexibility and IT Skills. The primary responsibility of this role, as part ofUH Sussex PathologyIT team, is to support,manage and develop existing IT systems and electronic communications between pathology sites (RSCH, PRH, SRH & WOR) and its users in Primary care, communitytrustsand other healthcare providers.

Main duties of the job

This role includes supporting the administration of Pathology Results reporting and Order-communication systems that underpins Pathology Service delivery at both Trusts and Primary Care. A key element of this is supporting and liaising with other trust departments, such as Diagnostic Imaging, Renal,etcthat have invested in extensions to the original core pathology systems to support their clinical functions. The role includes performing and adapting data extraction from the laboratory IT systems to inform routine performance monitoring, clinical queries, businessactivityand Freedom of Information requests.

The role will involve close liaison with pathology IT and departmental staff,UH Sussexstaff,GPsand other healthcare providers. The role willrepresentUH Sussexand theday-to-dayinteraction withall ofits service users. Close working with Pathology IT colleagues in the widerUH SussexTeam is expectedon a daily basis. Theprincipleaims are reciprocal sharing of knowledge and skills, to provide continuity for the service, provide a supportiveworking environment and to continue to promote and develop joined-up IT over the whole service.

Person Specification

Experience/Qualifications

Essential
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent experience in a related pathology discipline. Experience of performing a range of administrative and laboratory duties ideally in Pathology lab although not essential e.g. experience of manning reception and fielding telephone calls. Experience of dealing with sensitive information and data and of providing confidential and sometimes distressing information. Understanding of basic lab duties such as performing tests, processing bloods or tissues and undertaking basic analysis of specimens is also essential.
Desirable
  • Experience of working in a similar role ideally within a Pathology department. Experience of working with Integrated Clinical Environment (ICE) and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).

Skills

Essential
  • Able to use computer software to develop or create statistical reports requiring formulae, query reports or detailed drawings/ diagrams using desktop publishing (DTP) or computer aid design (CAD). Data entry, text processing or storage of data, utilising paper or computer based data entry systems. Maintain one or more information systems. Design, develop or adapt information systems. Able to perform daily house-keeping tasks on the Laboratory Computer systems including the monitoring of all interfaces, disk usage, network performance, backup procedures, network services, system-critical applications and communications middleware. To maintain a user database of data communications systems. To maintain and develop a practical administration system users. For example, so that GP Practice administrators can ensure that their staff user accounts, role based access, permissions etc. are current and functioning as required.

  • Ability to provide ad-hoc advice and basic IT support to users of the systems

  • To be aware and supportive of the main duties of other members of the Pathology IT Team in their roles in Data Analysis, Analyser interfaces, Point of Care Testing systems, Blood tracking systems, User-account administration, Patient merging, Change control procedures, Computer systems validation, electronic results reporting and Order communication systems.
