Research Associate: AI for Neurotechnology
Research Associate: AI for Neurotechnology
Department: Institute for Augmented Human
Salary: Starting from £38,784, rising to £46,049 (pro rata)
Contract Type: Full-time, Fixed-term
Closing Date: Monday, 10 November 2025
About the role
The UKRI Turing AI Acceleration Fellowship Project and related neurotechnology research at the University of Bath, led by Professor Damien Coyle, aims to develop next-generation AI methods to translate electrophysiological signals into control signals for brain–computer interface (BCI) technologies. These advances will be trialled at scale with end-users, driving the development of robust, wearable neurotechnologies.
This role offers an excellent opportunity for a researcher with expertise in neural signal processing and AI/machine learning for the analysis, classification, and decoding of high-resolution electroencephalography (EEG).
Working with Prof Coyle and the Turing AI Fellowship team at the Bath Institute for the Augmented Human, the Research Associate will:
- Design and implement novel AI models and algorithms
- Contribute to the planning and execution of research experiments with human participants
- Manage and analyse large, complex datasets
- Develop software and prototype real-time AI solutions
- Publish results in high-impact journals and conferences
- Collaborate with AI researchers, engineers, neuroscientists, psychologists, trials managers, and neuroimaging experts across multiple projects
By advancing novel AI approaches and demonstrating them in large-scale trials, this project has the potential to transform the future of neurotechnology, enabling more reliable BCIs, accelerating clinical translation for rehabilitation, and contributing to the broader vision of safe and effective human augmentation.
About you
We are looking for a motivated researcher who can get projects off the ground quickly and make a meaningful contribution within a four-month, fixed-term post. You will bring strong technical expertise and a collaborative approach to help deliver high-quality research outputs in a short timeframe. This role is ideal for a researcher keen to make an immediate contribution and strengthen their profile in AI for neurotechnology through impactful short-term work.
- AI/ML research, particularly deep learning using platforms such as Keras, PyTorch, or TensorFlow
- Developing and testing novel or customised AI models for complex, noisy, real-world datasets
- Software optimisation for high-performance computing on CPU and GPU clusters
- VR/AR or game development for applications, including BCI
Further information
For an informal discussion relating to the role, please contact Prof Damien Coyle or Dr Yue Zhang.
The post may involve travel within the UK and internationally, occasional extended stays off-campus, and the need to arrange and manage travel logistics and expenses. Access to personal transport may be advantageous.
