Overall purpose/accountabilities

Provide comprehensive technical support for the day-to-day operation of the Simulation Ward, ensuring simulation equipment, resources and learning environments are prepared, maintained and operated effectively to support the delivery of Nursing programmes at the University of Sunderland in London (UoSiL).

The postholder is responsible for the setup, operation, maintenance and breakdown of simulation equipment, stock management, and providing technical support to academic staff, students and other users to ensure the effective delivery of simulation-based learning.

Main duties

Prepare all equipment, consumables, materials and other resources within the Simulation Ward, ensuring they are available and ready to support teaching, assessment, student projects, research and external activities.

Prepare, configure and restore simulation rooms and equipment before and after teaching sessions, examinations and other activities, ensuring learning environments are operationally ready and returned to the required standard following use.

Provide day-to-day operational support to the Senior Simulation Ward Technician, assisting in the efficient delivery of simulation-based teaching, learning and assessment activities.

Support the day-to-day operation of the Simulation Ward, preparing activities in accordance with teaching timetables, responding to timetable changes and maintaining accurate operational records for audit purposes.

Assist and advise students and staff in the safe use and operation of simulation equipment and apparatus, demonstrating a range of simulation techniques, processes and procedures as required.

Provide technical guidance and demonstrations on simulation equipment to staff and students, supporting training and development activities led by the Senior Simulation Ward Technician.

Assist with stock ordering, goods receipting and inventory checks in accordance with University procurement procedures.

Maintain accurate equipment, asset and inventory records, including stock levels, maintenance schedules and usage information, reporting shortages, faults and replacement requirements to the Senior Simulation Ward Technician.

Undertake routine inspections, testing and basic maintenance of simulation and clinical equipment, including specialist technologies such as the Anatomage Table, reporting faults and service requirements to the Senior Simulation Ward Technician.

Support the setup, operation and breakdown of simulation activities, examinations, open days, recruitment events and external engagements, ensuring equipment and resources are prepared and operated safely and effectively.

Work collaboratively with IT colleagues to support the maintenance, configuration and troubleshooting of simulation equipment, software and associated digital systems where required.

Comply with health and safety legislation, University policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safe systems of work, including completing risk assessments, reporting hazards, defects and incidents to the Senior Simulation Ward Technician.

Support the preparation and application of moulage, including simulated injuries, wounds, bruising and other medical conditions, to standardised patients and simulators to enhance the realism of simulation-based learning.

Support the Senior Simulation Ward Technician in the creation, review and documentation of simulation scenarios, operational procedures and best practice guidance.

Maintain the Simulation Ward to a consistently high standard of cleanliness, organisation and operational readiness, creating a safe, professional and welcoming learning environment.

Provide operational support to the wider Facilities and Events Team as required.

Attend mandatory training and actively participate in continuing professional development to maintain and enhance professional knowledge and skills.

Other factors: A flexible approach to work is required with some evening and weekend working required on occasion. Annual leave may be restricted at certain times of the year to accommodate business needs.

Person Specification

Experience

• Experience of working in a clinical, healthcare or healthcare simulation environment.
• Experience of working within a technical support team or similar operational environment.
• Experience of supporting or operating simulation equipment, advanced patient simulators and/or audio-visual systems.
• Experience of preparing and maintaining clinical equipment used for patient care, treatment and diagnostics, including Point of Care equipment.
• Experience of following health and safety procedures and safe systems of work within a clinical, technical or educational environment.
