Infrastructure Server Engineer Location: Hybrid / UK-based Contract Length: 6 Months IR35 Status: Inside IR35
OverviewWe are seeking an experienced Infrastructure Server Engineer to support a large-scale server estate modernisation programme across on-premise and cloud environments.
This Server Engineer role is heavily focused on server discovery, analysis, remediation, upgrade, migration, and decommissioning activities. The successful candidate will be responsible for assessing existing Windows and SQL Server environments, understanding server dependencies and hosted applications, identifying opportunities for consolidation or retirement, and delivering server upgrade and migration projects.
This is a hands-on infrastructure role requiring strong experience of Windows Server and SQL Server upgrades within enterprise environments. Candidates must be comfortable investigating legacy server estates, engaging with stakeholders to understand business dependencies, and executing migration and decommissioning activities while minimising operational risk.
Server Engineer Key Responsibilities- Conduct discovery and assessment activities across Windows and SQL Server estates to understand server purpose, dependencies, applications, and business ownership
- Analyse existing infrastructure and produce recommendations for upgrade, migration, consolidation, or decommissioning
- Lead and support Windows Server upgrade projects across multiple server versions
- Lead and support SQL Server upgrade and migration activities, ensuring compatibility and minimal business disruption
- Identify legacy infrastructure suitable for retirement and manage server decommissioning activities
- Work closely with application owners, infrastructure teams, and business stakeholders to understand server utilisation and operational requirements
- Troubleshoot infrastructure, server, and application issues arising during upgrade and migration projects
- Maintain accurate technical documentation, migration plans, dependency maps, and operational records
- Ensure all activities comply with security, governance, and change management processes
- Proven experience working within Infrastructure Engineering, Server Engineering, or Windows Infrastructure environments
- Strong hands-on experience upgrading Windows Server platforms within enterprise environments
- Strong hands-on experience upgrading and migrating Microsoft SQL Server environments
- Experience conducting server discovery, estate assessments, and dependency analysis
- Experience planning and delivering server migration projects
- Experience identifying and decommissioning legacy infrastructure
- Strong understanding of Windows Server, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, and virtualisation technologies
- Experience troubleshooting complex server and infrastructure-related issues
- Ability to engage with technical and non-technical stakeholders to understand server ownership, application dependencies, and migration requirements
- Experience working within structured change management and regulated environments
- Experience with Azure and cloud migration initiatives
- Knowledge of server monitoring and infrastructure management tools
- Experience with PowerShell scripting and automation
- Exposure to infrastructure transformation or datacentre migration programmes
- Experience with CMDB, asset discovery, or server inventory management tools
- Successful completion of Windows Server and SQL Server upgrade activities
- Accurate server estate discovery and dependency mapping
- Delivery of server migration and consolidation initiatives
- Safe and controlled decommissioning of legacy infrastructure
- Maintenance of accurate technical documentation and operational records
