Firmware Engineer

Firmware Engineer

Embedded C / C++

Merseyside / Cheshire | £35k–£48k

An established electronics company in the North West is looking for a Firmware Engineer to work on its embedded control products. Core stack is C / C++ on microcontrollers with CAN, and it's a genuinely hands-on role, so as much time with the hardware as at the keyboard. Commutable from across Merseyside and Cheshire.

Day to day you'd be building and maintaining firmware, then testing and commissioning it yourself on rigs and in situ, working alongside a senior developer. It suits an established embedded engineer who wants to go deeper on CAN and low-level hardware work rather than sit at a desk full-time.

What they're looking for

  • Several years of commercial embedded firmware in C / C++ on microcontrollers, with a track record of delivery.
  • Working knowledge of CAN and the appetite to build real depth in it.
  • Genuinely comfortable with hardware: wiring, harnesses, debugging and commissioning out in the field.
  • Solid embedded fundamentals: interrupts, timers, serial protocols (SPI, I2C, UART).
  • Able to read schematics and use debug tools (scope, logic analyser, CAN tools), and work closely with hardware engineers.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Nice to have: J1939, LIN or UDS; RTOS; industrial or embedded experience in a hardware-heavy sector; a relevant engineering or computing degree, or equivalent experience.

Practicalities

Site-based with some hybrid flex, but the hardware and test kit live on site, so plan on roughly three days a week in. Not a remote role.
