Senior Infrastructure Engineer
Location: Ipswich
Working type: Hybrid - three days a week onsite
Hours of work: Full time - 37.5
The Senior Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for supporting and evolving the organisation’s hybrid IT environment, with a primary focus on cloud platforms alongside core on-premise infrastructure.
This role plays a key part in delivering a cloud-first strategy, ensuring services are secure, scalable, and resilient, while maintaining and optimising existing on-premise systems.
Cloud Infrastructure & Services • Support, administer, and optimise cloud platforms (primarily Microsoft Azure) • Manage and support Microsoft 365 services (Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint) • Administer identity and access management via Microsoft Entra (Azure AD) • Monitor cloud environments for performance, security, and cost efficiency • Support cloud migrations, deployments, and transformation initiatives • Contribute to automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices
On-Premise Infrastructure • Maintain core on-premise infrastructure (servers, storage, networking) • Support hybrid connectivity between on-prem and cloud environments • Manage Windows Server environments and core services (AD, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy) • Ensure backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity capabilities
Networking & Connectivity • Support network infrastructure including LAN/WAN, firewalls, and VPNs • Troubleshoot connectivity issues across hybrid environments • Ensure secure and reliable access to cloud and on-prem services
Security & Compliance • Implement and maintain security best practices across cloud and infrastructure • Support vulnerability management, patching, and threat monitoring • Assist in maintaining compliance with standards such as ISO 27001 and Cyber Essentials • Support identity security, conditional access, and endpoint protection
Service Delivery & Support • Provide 2nd/3rd line support for infrastructure and cloud-related incidents • Work closely with the Service Desk to resolve escalations • Maintain documentation, runbooks, and knowledge articles • Support SLAs, KPIs, and service reporting
Projects & Continuous Improvement • Deliver infrastructure and cloud projects (migrations, upgrades, modernisation) • Support adoption of cloud-first and automation strategies • Identify opportunities to improve performance, resilience, and cost efficiency • Contribute to IT roadmaps and technical standards
Person Specification
Essential Experience & Skills • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure (IaaS, PaaS fundamentals) • Strong knowledge of Microsoft 365 administration • Experience with identity and access management (Entra ID / Azure AD) • Solid understanding of Windows Server and on-prem infrastructure • Knowledge of networking fundamentals (DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, VPNs) • Experience supporting hybrid cloud environments • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
Desirable • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform, Bicep) • Experience with monitoring tools (Azure Monitor, Log Analytics) • Familiarity with endpoint management (Intune) • Scripting/automation skills (PowerShell) • Understanding of ITIL frameworks
