Senior Backend Engineer

A fantastic opportunity for a suitably experienced Senior Backend Engineer seeking a role where they can make a real difference. You will help define how AI is safely used in front line healthcare.

Our client has closed a $12million Series A fundraise and they're now hiring their second back end engineer to work alongside their extremely experienced Head of Backend and VP of engineering as well as closing working with a team of doctors helping build the next generation of AI powered clinical knowledge tools

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you'll play a key role in building and scaling the core infrastructure that powers our clients platform. This is a hands-on role requiring deep experience in backend engineering, cloud systems, and architectural thinking.

Location: Belfast - Hybrid

Salary: £80,000 - £110,00 + Stock Options + Benefits

Tech Stack

Cloud-native platform. Experience with the following will be highly desirable:

  • AWS – Lambda, API Gateway, Cognito, S3 and OpenSearch
  • Node.js / TypeScript and Python
  • DynamoDB and PostgreSQL
  • Serverless Architecture and microservices patterns.
  • Infrastructure tools like Terraform, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Security and compliance practices, especially relevant in healthcare.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and build robust, scalable cloud-first backend systems.
  • Contribute to infrastructure-as-code practices and DevOps tooling.
  • Build and maintain LLM-powered features such as RAG pipelines for clinical information.
  • Develop and optimise agentic document extraction workflows to process clinical PDFs, policies, and handbooks into structured formats.
  • Collaborate closely with our product and frontend teams to deliver high-impact features.
  • Write clean, well-tested code and guide best practices across the engineering team.
  • Take ownership of system reliability, performance, and security in a healthcare context.

Key Skills:

  • 5+ years of backend engineering experience in production environments.
  • Strong AWS proficiency - hands-on experience building and deploying systems in the cloud.
  • Familiarity with embedding models, chunking strategies, and semantic search.
  • Experience working in a small team or startup environment.
  • A pragmatic problem-solver who balances speed with sustainability.
  • Passion for writing maintainable, scalable code.
  • Knowledge of security and compliance best practices (e.g. HIPAA/GDPR, NHS DTAC, SOC 2).
  • Bonus: experience in healthcare, medtech, or regulated environments.
