Financial Data Engineer

Overview:

Opportunity to join a leading and expanding Wealth and Investment management firm to support senior Middle Office and Technology leadership through high-quality financial data analysis and reporting.

This is a new role which has arisen due to expansion within the team as a result of increasing levels of client activity.

The role sits at the intersection of Middle Office, Finance and Technology and will partner closely with Development / Engineering to ensure data is modelled appropriately and delivered through governed reporting layers.

The successful candidate will be hands-on across Power BI and Microsoft Fabric, comfortable in SQL Server and will leverage Python for analytical modelling, statistical methods and automation where appropriate, to build and maintain robust reporting for New New Assets (NNA) and Assets Under Management (AUM) including advanced analytical approaches to the management and interpretation of new and gross transitions.

About the Company:

With over £24 billion in assets under management (AUM), a team of c.370 professionals across 5 global offices, W1M specialises in working with high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals and families, charities, and institutions. Beyond our direct client relationships, we also maintain a longstanding partnership with Independent Financial Advisers, providing access to our market-leading investment solutions.

We are continuing to expand with ambitious plans to double our AUM in the next 4 years based on the foundation of the quality of advice and services we provide to our clients, alongside peer-leading investment performance.

Internally we are a highly collaborative organisation free from the politics and bureaucracy of larger firms that gives everyone the opportunity to make a real difference and enhance the way we work. We have a sociable culture with sporting and cultural events throughout the year and a welcoming and supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Own the delivery of consolidated, maintainable NNA and AUM reporting, including definitions, calculations, and transparent logic for net and gross transitions.
  • Develop and maintain Power BI datasets/semantic models, reports, and supporting transformation layers to ensure consistent, trusted reporting experience for stakeholders.
  • Build and evolve data solutions in Microsoft Fabric (e.g., ingestion/transform/model layers as required), partnering with Engineering and Data colleagues to ensure reliable data flows and refresh processes.
  • Perform data analysis to identify trends, drivers, and anomalies in NNA/AUM movements, and communicate findings clearly to senior Middle Office and Technology stakeholders.
  • Apply Python and statistical methods to enhance insight (e.g., forecasting, classification of flows, scenario analysis, variance explanations), and produce repeatable analysis where appropriate.
  • Establish and maintain reconciliation and validation approaches to ensure reporting accuracy and consistency, including clear evidence of data lineage and assumptions.
  • Produce and maintain documentation (definitions, methodologies, data mappings, refresh cadence, limitations) to ensure the reporting is maintainable and auditable over time.
  • Partner with Finance and Middle Office to align reporting outputs with business expectations and to ensure reporting meets decision-making needs.
  • Operate “secure by design” when handling data: apply appropriate access controls, least-privilege practices, and careful data handling aligned to Technology and business expectations.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by simplifying reporting processes, reducing manual steps, and increasing self-service capability for end users.

Background / Experience and Competencies Required

  • Demonstrable experience in Wealth Management and/or Asset Management domains, with strong understanding of financial data and reporting concepts (e.g., AUM, flows, performance-adjacent reporting, operational finance inputs).
  • Strong hands-on capability in Microsoft Fabric and Power BI, including data modelling and building maintainable reporting solutions.
  • Strong SQL skills (SQL Server preferred), including querying, performance-aware design patterns, and supporting reliable reporting datasets.
  • Strong Python capability for data analysis and automation, including statistical methods and modelling/prediction techniques.
  • Proven ability to translate business questions into structured analytical approaches and communicate findings clearly to senior stakeholders.
  • Comfortable working across multiple teams (Middle Office, Finance, Development/Engineering) and managing priorities in a change-heavy environment.

Competencies

  • Analytical problem solving: Structured approach to data investigation, variance analysis, and insight generation
  • Data and technical fluency: Strong command of SQL, Fabric, Power BI, and Python to deliver maintainable solutions
  • Service ownership: Accountable for reliable, high-quality reporting outcomes and stakeholder trust
  • Stakeholder influence: Able to engage senior stakeholders and communicate technical detail as clear business insight
  • Continuous improvement: Reduces manual effort, simplifies reporting processes, and improves usability over time
  • Security mindset: Handles data responsibly and designs solutions with appropriate controls and access discipline
