Backend Solution Architect

Backend Solution Architect (Portfolio Brands within retail / e-commerce) required for a one year, fully remote, outside IR35 contract.

Role
  • Design and evolve the backend architecture of a high-scale eCommerce platform with a strong focus on performance, scalability, and availability.
  • Define architecture guidelines and establish best practices for backend services and APIs.
  • Drive cloud-native solutions using Azure (preferred), or other cloud providers (GCP).
  • Lead the adoption and implementation of event-driven architecture.
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, and DevOps teams to ensure seamless integration and deployment of backend services.
  • Own architectural decisions for systems involving SQL/NoSQL databases, Redis, Kafka, Solace, and other backend technologies.
  • Lead initiatives for backend modernization, microservices migration, and platform scalability.
  • Ensure security, compliance, and maintainability in backend systems.
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies, frameworks, and tools.
Experience
  • 10+ years of experience in backend engineering; at least 3 years in an architecture or senior technical leadership role.
  • Strong experience in designing and building systems using .NET (C#) or other backend stacks, e.g., Java or Node.js.
  • Deep expertise in cloud architecture, especially with Microsoft Azure (App Services, AKS, Functions, Storage, Service Bus, etc.).
  • Proven experience in event-driven architectures, using technologies like Kafka, Solace, or Azure Event Hubs.
  • Solid understanding of microservices, API design, REST/gRPC, and service meshes.
  • Strong experience with both SQL (e.g., SQL Server, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases (e.g., Cosmos DB, MongoDB).
  • Knowledge of caching strategies using Redis or similar technologies.
  • Experience in integration patterns - synchronous/asynchronous, pub-sub, middleware, etc.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Nice to Have
  • eCommerce domain experience.
  • Experience in building headless commerce systems.
  • Knowledge of observability tools (e.g., Application Insights, Prometheus, Grafana).
  • Familiarity with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
