PCB Design/Layout Engineer - Contract

Location: Central Belt, Scotland
Working arrangement: Hybrid - 2-3 days per week on site
Contract length: 3 months

We are recruiting an experienced PCB Design/Layout Engineer for an initial three-month contract with an engineering organisation based in Scotland's Central Belt.

You will be responsible for creating complex, production-ready PCB layouts using Altium Designer, with a particular focus on high-speed interfaces, signal integrity, manufacturability, thermal performance and EMC compliance.

Key Responsibilities

• Create and maintain PCB layouts using Altium Designer.
• Convert approved schematics into production-ready PCB designs.
• Define PCB stack-ups, routing constraints and controlled-impedance requirements.
• Perform component placement and routing, considering performance, manufacturability, thermal management and EMC compliance.
• Apply high-speed design practices to PCIe, Ethernet, DDR memory, USB and other differential signalling technologies.
• Implement signal integrity, power integrity, return-current, grounding and EMC best practices.
• Create and maintain schematic symbols, PCB footprints and 3D component models.
• Manage component libraries in accordance with internal standards.
• Review datasheets and package drawings to create accurate component definitions.
• Produce fabrication, assembly and manufacturing documentation packages.
• Participate in design reviews and recommend layout-related improvements.

Essential Skills and Experience

• Strong commercial experience in PCB design and layout.
• Advanced proficiency with Altium Designer.
• Proven experience designing complex, multilayer PCBs.
• Experience creating and managing component libraries.
• Strong knowledge of:
  • Differential-pair routing
  • Controlled-impedance design
  • Signal integrity fundamentals
  • Layer stack-up design
  • Design for Manufacture (DFM)
  • Design for Test (DFT)
• Experience working with:
  • PCIe
  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • USB 2.0 and USB 3.x
  • DDR memory interfaces
  • SPI, I2C and UART
  • RS-232 and RS-485
