Digital Systems and Automation Engineer
Job Purpose
The purpose of this role is to support the ongoing development and enhancement of the internal IT systems by contributing to the implementation and optimisation of AI-driven, data-led and automation solutions that enhance operational efficiency and business performance.
The role will combine technical capability with analytical insight to assist in identifying opportunities to use AI and automation to improve processes. Responsibilities will include supporting system integration and configuration, developing data models and reports, supporting the evaluation and implementation of AI tools, and ensuring secure, reliable and well-documented solutions aligned to organisational objectives.
The position will work closely with IT and business functions to support innovation, improve data visibility, and assist in embedding automation and AI capabilities across the organisation.
Key Tasks
- Assist in the design, implementation and optimisation of AI-enabled solutions to improve efficiency, accuracy and decision-making.
- Support the development and maintenance of workflow automation solutions (including low-code/no-code platforms where appropriate) under the direction of the IT Manager.
- Support system integration work to help reduce manual data handling and improve information flow between applications.
- Develop and maintain dashboards, management reports and reporting outputs to support operational and strategic decision-making.
- Support the configuration, enhancement and integration of internal IT systems and applications.
- Assist with technical testing, validation and documentation of system changes.
- Liaise with third-party vendors and service providers where required.
- Support change management activities and user adoption of new systems and automation tools.
- Provide support to end users with system-related queries and problem resolution.
- Ensure compliance with company standards, data security policies and best practice development procedures.

Person Specification
Essential Skills & Attributes
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate business requirements into practical digital solutions.
- Experience working with data, reporting tools or dashboards to support business insight and decision-making.
- Exposure to automation tools or scripting, with a willingness to develop further skills (e.g., low-code/no-code solutions, workflow tools or basic integrations).
- Interest in AI technologies and how they can be applied in a business environment.
- General technical understanding of IT systems, data structures and integration principles.
- High level of attention to detail, particularly in relation to data accuracy and system reliability.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively across technical and non-technical teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
- Organised and methodical approach to analysis, testing and documentation.
- Proactive mindset with a willingness to learn and explore emerging technologies.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages.
Desirable
- Approximately 1–2 years’ experience in an IT, data, systems or digital solutions role within an IT environment (or relevant placement/project experience).
- Familiarity with data and reporting technologies, such as:
- SQL Server
- Power BI or other dashboard/reporting platforms
- Data modelling and structured reporting design
- Exposure to one or more automation or workflow tools, such as:
- Microsoft Power Platform (Power Automate, Power Apps)
- Basic scripting (Python or PowerShell)
- Automated data flows and process improvement tools
- Awareness of AI-enabled tools and business applications, such as:
- AI-supported process improvement
- Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, or similar technologies
- Awareness of how business systems exchange data (e.g., integrations or APIs).
- Experience supporting or enhancing internal business systems, including web-based or ERP-related applications.
Qualifications
Degree in a STEM-related discipline preferred (e.g. Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Information Systems).
Working Hours
Full-time, permanent position.
Monday to Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm.
30-minute lunch break.
Monthly pay in arrears (by the 28th of each month).
