Senior Software Engineer

Contract Senior Engineer – Observability (OpenTelemetry Focus)

Rate: £750–£780 per day (Inside IR35)

Duration: 6 months

Start: April

Work Pattern: Hybrid (3 days/month onsite)

Wedo has partnered with a Fortune 500 business looking to bring in a software engineer who’s moved into observability — not the other way round.

This isn’t a “keep the lights on” role.

It’s for someone who’s built systems, understands code paths, and now wants to shape how those systems are understood, measured, and improved at scale.

🚧 The Reality

Observability here hasn’t been neglected it’s just grown organically.

Different teams, different standards.

Inconsistent instrumentation.

High-cardinality data driving cost.

Signal-to-noise ratio... not ideal.

There’s already a team tackling technical debt.

This role is about stepping back and engineering what “good” looks like across the estate.

🧠 What You’ll Actually Be Doing

  • Instrumenting services using OpenTelemetry across AWS (Lambda, EC2, Fargate)
  • Defining and rolling out consistent observability standards
  • Reducing noise and cost without losing critical insight
  • Working directly with engineering teams to embed observability into how they build
  • Helping shape the next iteration of the observability strategy

This is hands-on engineering work, not just configuring dashboards in New Relic.

🔍 What They’re Looking For

  • Strong software engineering background (Go, Java, or Python)
  • Proven OpenTelemetry experience in production
  • Experience integrating OTEL into AWS environments (Lambda, EC2, Fargate)
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems / microservices
  • Experience instrumenting codebases, not just reading metrics
  • Exposure to APM tools (New Relic ideally, but not essential)
  • Bonus: Terraform, Kubernetes, CI/CD
