About the company

Our client is an established designer and manufacturer of high quality products for the construction industry. They employ around 150 people, and the business has just had its strongest financial year to date. Growth is being driven by major work in data centres, power infrastructure and AI facilities, and they continue to invest in their people, products, systems and technical capability.

The opportunity

This is a brand new role, created because of continued growth and the increasing scale and complexity of projects. You'll lead the day to day running of the Technical Department, working closely with the Technical Director. The client is open to experienced technical managers as well as strong structural or civil engineers ready to step up.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the Technical Department across both offices, improving coordination and consistency between the two teams.
  • Plan and allocate workloads, resources, priorities and deadlines.
  • Manage performance, recruitment, absence and development, including mentoring staff working towards chartership.
  • Report departmental performance, technical risks and resourcing to the Technical Director.
  • Check and approve engineering calculations, designs, models and drawings, making sure information is issued accurately and to programme.
  • Carry out designs and calculations for new, complex or technically challenging projects.
  • Maintain technical governance and compliance with legislation, British Standards, Eurocodes and product standards, and standardise design methods and details.
  • Oversee AutoCAD, Tekla Structures, STAAD.Pro and other structural design software, and roll out improved systems and processes.
  • Act as the technical link between design, manufacture, delivery and installation, working with Production, Quality, Commercial, Contracts, Logistics, site teams and customers.

Essential experience and skills

  • A degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related discipline.
  • A strong structural or civil engineering design background. Precast or structural concrete experience is preferred but not essential.
  • Experience leading an engineering or technical team, or a clear readiness to step up into leadership.
  • Strong knowledge of structural engineering principles and experience designing complex structural projects.
  • A good understanding of design to manufacture and design to installation processes.
  • Detailed knowledge of British Standards, Eurocodes and relevant product standards.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Tekla Structures, STAAD.Pro or similar, plus good Microsoft Office skills.

What's on offer

  • 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays.
  • Company pension scheme.
  • Company laptop and pool car for travel between offices.
  • Structured training, plus support towards chartership and other relevant qualifications.
  • Clear progression in a growing, forward thinking business.
  • The chance to lead and shape a multidisciplinary technical function across two offices.
  • Hands on involvement in product development and complex projects across data centres, power and infrastructure.
