Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Digital team at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust as a Digital Automation Specialist. The post holder will provide specialist expertise in Robotic Process Automation (RPA), leading the design, development, testing, implementation and support of complex automation solutions that improve efficiency, productivity and service delivery across the Trust.
Working with clinical and corporate services, Digital teams and external suppliers, you will play a key role in understanding service needs, analysing workflows and delivering secure, reliable and cost-effective automation solutions aligned with Trust standards, governance requirements and strategic objectives.
The role combines hands-on technical development with technical leadership, stakeholder engagement and service improvement. You will provide specialist advice on automation, contribute to governance and assurance processes, support the reliability and performance of live automation services, and provide training, mentoring and technical guidance to junior colleagues.
This is an opportunity to make a significant contribution to digital transformation across the Trust, using automation to support improvements in the quality, efficiency and delivery of NHS services.
Main duties of the job
As a Digital Automation Specialist, you will:
- Lead the design, development, testing, implementation and support of complex RPA solutions across the full development lifecycle.
- Work with clinical, corporate and Digital teams to understand service needs, analyse workflows and identify opportunities for automation.
- Develop secure, robust and reliable automation solutions that comply with Trust policies, governance requirements and industry best practice.
- Monitor automation performance, availability and reliability, taking corrective action where required to maintain effective services.
- Provide specialist technical advice and leadership on RPA, development standards, automation tools and service improvement.
- Support change management, testing, assurance and governance processes to ensure automation solutions are safe and appropriately approved before deployment.
- Develop and maintain standards, processes, controls and documentation for automation development, testing, release and support.
- Work collaboratively with infrastructure teams, suppliers, project leads and wider Digital colleagues to deliver automation projects to agreed timescales and quality standards.
- Provide training, mentoring and technical guidance to junior colleagues, while contributing to service planning, risk management and continuous improvement.
- Keep up to date with developments in automation, AI and digital technologies and share relevant learning with the wider team.

Job Purpose:
To lead the design, development, testing, implementation, and support of complex Robotic Process Automation (RPA) solutions that improve efficiency, productivity, and service delivery across the Trust. The postholder will provide specialist expertise in automation, ensuring solutions are secure, reliable, cost-effective, and aligned to organisational standards, governance requirements, and strategic objectives. The role will support both clinical and corporate transformation by delivering robust automation solutions, contributing to service improvement, and providing expert advice, training, mentorship, and day-to-day support to junior roles and colleagues across the department.
Key Duties:
Lead the design, development, testing, implementation, and support of complex RPA solutions across the full development lifecycle.
Work with stakeholders across the organisation to understand service needs, analyse workflows, and develop functional specifications for automation solutions.
Communicate complex technical concepts in a clear and accessible way to technical and non-technical audiences.
Develop and maintain secure, robust, reliable, and responsive automation solutions in line with Trust policies, governance requirements, and industry best practice.
Ensure automation solutions maintain system security, data integrity, resilience, and business continuity requirements.
Support the planning and management of changes to automations and related systems, ensuring appropriate change control processes are followed.
Participate in relevant governance processes to ensure solutions are appropriately tested, assured, approved, and safe before deployment into live environments.
Monitor the performance, availability, and reliability of automation services, taking corrective action where required and contributing to service reporting and capacity planning.
Work with customers and stakeholders to develop automation specifications for review and sign-off.
Provide specialist advice and technical leadership on RPA, development standards, tooling, and service improvement.
Develop, implement, and maintain standards, processes, controls, and documentation for automation development, testing, release, support, and maintenance.
Liaise with infrastructure teams, suppliers, and other technical colleagues to support the delivery of automation projects.
Support project delivery by working closely with project leads, developers, and wider digital teams to ensure deliverables are completed to time and quality standards.
Promote continuous improvement in the quality, performance, and delivery of RPA services and identify opportunities for future development.
Provide training, mentoring, technical guidance, and day-to-day support to junior roles and other colleagues in the department. Contribute to service planning, performance management, risk management, and governance arrangements within the RPA service.
Ensure automation services are delivered in line with agreed service standards and service level expectations.
Work collaboratively with colleagues to identify, manage, and mitigate risks associated with automation services.

Keep up to date with developments in automation, AI and digital analysis techniques, sharing learning with the wider team.

Qualifications
- Degree level education/qualification or
- equivalent in ICT or related field
- Continuous improvement experience
- An understanding of RPA & PowerPlatorm Apps best practice delivery
- Power Automate certification (Developer / Professional Developer).
- Experience of working within the NHS or other public sector environments.
- Knowledge of Agile or hybrid delivery methodologies.
- Experience with cloud environments.
- Familiarity with other RPA platforms (UiPath, Automation Anywhere, etc.).
