The Role
A globally leading engineering business is looking for Embedded Software Engineers to join an innovation team at their Southampton site, developing embedded software for high-reliability systems. This is a hybrid role, with three days per week required onsite.
The client works across the full embedded stack, from low-level C through to multi-threaded, OS-based C++, and the role can be shaped around your own strengths and experience level. Whether you're a junior engineer building your embedded skillset or a senior engineer looking for technical depth, there's scope to tailor the work to you. What You'll Be Doing
- Developing and maintaining embedded software in C/C++
- Designing, testing, and integrating software for complex embedded systems
- Working across the full software development lifecycle
- Collaborating with hardware, FPGA, and systems engineering teams
- Building robust, high-performance software for advanced engineering applications
What We're Looking For
- Embedded software development experience in C and/or C++
- Experience working in Linux environments
- Understanding of Object-Oriented Design (OOD), SOLID principles, and design patterns
- Familiarity with unit testing and modern software development practices
- Exposure to communication protocols such as CAN, RS232/RS422, UDP, or TCP/IP
Important: due to the security clearance required for this role, candidates must have been resident in the UK for at least five years.
Desirable Experience
- MATLAB/Simulink
- OpenGL or Vulkan
- CUDA or OpenCL
- FPGA or HDL exposure
- Video processing or machine learning
- Background in defence, aerospace, automotive, or another high-reliability industry
