SQL Server Database Engineer

Applications and SQL Server Database Engineer

Location: Kew, TW9

Work Arrangement: Hybrid – 3 days in Kew, 2 days from home

Are you early to mid-level in your career as a SQL Server or database professional, with solid T-SQL skills and an interest in scripting and automation? This Applications and SQL Server Database Engineer role offers the chance to deepen your SQL and data expertise while gaining exposure to modern Microsoft tools such as the Power Platform, within a supportive, nationally significant organisation.

This is a permanent junior-to-mid-level role, ideal for someone who wants to grow technically, take on increasing responsibility, and learn from experienced colleagues — without pressure to already be an expert in every tool.

About the Role

You’ll join a small, collaborative Business Systems team supporting internal applications and databases used by hundreds of staff. The core focus of the role is SQL Server, T-SQL and data-related work, including queries, fixes, checks and small enhancements.

Alongside this, you’ll have the opportunity to build experience with Power Automate and Power Apps over time, supported by mentoring and training — but this is not essential to join.

Skills – What We're Looking For

You don't need to have held the exact title of Applications and SQL Server Database Engineer to be successful here. If your strengths are in SQL Server and T-SQL, and you’ve picked up some scripting experience in a junior or early mid-level data, development or application support role, we’d like to hear from you.

Essential Skills

•    Conversant with MS SQL Server 2016 or later.

•    Confident use of T-SQL (queries, updates, basic optimisation)

•    Some scripting experience (e.g. Python, PowerShell, C# or similar).

•    Interest in working with data, systems and problem-solving.

•    Clear, collaborative communication.

•    Good English verbal and written communication skills.

•    Ability to obtain Security Clearance (must have lived in the UK for the last 3 years and be willing to go through the process).

Power Platform note:

Experience with Power Automate, Power Apps or Power BI is useful but not essential. This role provides an opportunity to develop skills in these areas as part of the job, alongside your core SQL and database responsibilities.

We welcome applications from people with a range of backgrounds and experiences. If you're unsure whether you meet all the requirements, we encourage you to apply. Please note that the organisation is unable to offer work sponsorship.

Key Responsibilities

As an Applications and SQL Server Database Engineer, you will:

•    Support and maintain business applications used across the organisation.

•    Write and optimise T-SQL queries, scripts and scheduled tasks.

•    Build or adjust Power Automate flows and Power Apps.

•    Assist with data integrity checks, updates and diagnostics.

•    Deliver fixes and changes with guidance from senior colleagues.

•    Document work clearly and follow safe-change controls.

•    Collaborate closely with users, colleagues and teams across IT.

Why This Is a Great Opportunity

This role combines technical grounding, public purpose and work–life balance, making it a strong next step for a developing SQL professional.

Why join:

  • SQL-first role with room to broaden into automation and low-code tools.
  • Purpose with real public impact – supporting access to nationally significant records.
  • Junior-to-mid-level scope with clear development and mentoring.
  • Modern Microsoft environment – SQL Server, scripting, Power Platform.
  • Stable hours and hybrid working – sustainable pace, no burnout culture.
  • Supportive Civil Service environment with long-term career focus.

This is an environment where systems are built to last, decisions are made carefully, and engineers are given the time and support to do things properly.
