Senior Python Developer (Derby)

Senior Python Developer // Derby (onsite) // £60,000 - £80,000

This is a senior backend role for someone who wants to own technical direction on high-impact software that supports the UK’s transition to low-carbon energy.

You’ll be leading technical delivery across Python APIs and services used in real-world energy infrastructure; think power grid management, nuclear, and sustainability-focused tech.

This isn’t a theory-heavy R&D role. It’s about secure, scalable, performant backend engineering that enables data to move reliably through critical systems. You’ll help shape the architecture, mentor junior devs, and influence DevOps practices across a growing team.

Day to day:

• Architecting and building secure Python APIs using Django or Flask
• Deploying services to AWS, Azure, or GCP using Terraform and Kubernetes
• Mentoring devs, improving CI/CD and DevSecOps pipelines
• Managing performance, reliability, and system security
• Working with stakeholders across product, DevOps and compliance

What you’ll bring:

• Deep knowledge of Python with strong experience in RESTful API design
• Cloud-native deployment skills (AWS, Azure or GCP)
• Infrastructure-as-Code with Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes
• Strong understanding of Agile and DevOps engineering culture
• Comfortable leading technical discussions and code reviews

Bonus if you have:

• Knowledge of GDS delivery standards
• Exposure to embedded or real-time systems
• Experience with big data or machine learning backends
