Software Engineer

Software Engineer | Newcastle upon Tyne | £65,000–£130,000 + 10% Bonus

I’m working with a rapidly growing technology consulting business in Newcastle that is looking to hire several Software Engineers due to significant client and project demand.

This is a broad, client-facing engineering role for someone who wants more than sitting within one product team, working on the same application and technology stack.

You'll work on complex technology programmes for large organisations, solving real business problems and delivering software alongside experienced engineers and client teams.

The business has grown significantly over the last 12 months and continues to see demand beyond the capacity of its existing engineering team. As a result, Software Engineering is a major area of investment, with multiple hires planned across different levels.

What you'll be doing

You'll take ownership of software delivery from understanding the initial problem through to designing, building, testing and delivering the solution.

Depending on the project, that could involve:

• Designing and building production software and applications
• Working across backend services, APIs and application architecture
• Engaging directly with users to understand business and technical requirements
• Translating complex problems into pragmatic technical solutions
• Working alongside client engineering teams to deliver projects collaboratively
• Taking ownership throughout the development lifecycle
• Challenging existing systems and identifying better ways of solving problems
• Working across different languages, frameworks and technology stacks
• Building an understanding of the client's business and domain, rather than focusing solely on the underlying technology

The important distinction is that this isn't a "tickets in, code out" Software Engineering position.

You'll be expected to understand why you're building something, communicate directly with the people using it and take responsibility for delivering the right solution.

What we're looking for

Ideally, you'll have 3+ years of commercial Software Engineering experience and strong engineering fundamentals.

We're looking for engineers who are comfortable being technology agnostic. You don't need experience across every language or framework, but you'll ideally have a strong background in one or more of:

• Python
• Java
• C# / .NET
• Rust
• Go
• TypeScript / JavaScript
• React
• Or another modern software engineering stack

We're much more interested in your overall engineering ability, problem-solving skills and ability to learn than whether you've spent your entire career working with one particular language.

We're particularly interested in engineers who have worked in consultancy, professional services or other client-facing technical environments. Consulting experience isn't essential, but you should be technically strong, comfortable communicating directly with stakeholders and interested in working across different technologies and business problems rather than being tied to one stack.

Package

• £65,000–£130,000 base salary, depending on level and experience
• Up to £100,000 for mid-level Engineers and £130,000 for Senior Engineers
• 10% bonus
• 25 days' annual leave + bank holidays
