DevOps Engineer

DevOps Engineer

Location: Reading (hybrid)

Type: Permanent, full-time

Salary: £65k

A growing software business in Reading is looking for a mid-level DevOps Engineer to take ownership of how it builds, ships and runs its infrastructure.

You'll join at the point where it matters most - automating deployments, standing up CI/CD properly, and shaping the tooling and workflows the engineering team relies on. It's a hands-on role with genuine influence, working side by side with the Engineering Lead to decide how things are done, not just keep them running.

The work

  • Design and automate CI/CD pipelines that let the team ship quickly and safely
  • Write Terraform to provision infrastructure as code - repeatable, version-controlled, no manual setup
  • Build and run a modern Kubernetes platform underpinning the products
  • Bring infrastructure under automation, cutting out manual toil and one-off fixes
  • Set up monitoring, alerting and observability so issues are caught early
  • Own reliability and uptime, and help define how the team responds when things break
  • Embed good DevOps practice - automation, repeatability and clean handoffs between dev and ops

What you'll need

  • Hands-on Kubernetes - managing and operating clusters day to day
  • Terraform - comfortable writing and maintaining infrastructure as code
  • A major cloud platform - GCP or AWS
  • Building and running CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins or similar)
  • Confident on Linux and networking - able to debug at the infrastructure layer
  • A DevOps mindset - you automate first and think in terms of repeatability and reliability

Nice to have

  • GitOps workflows and deployment automation (ArgoCD, Flux or similar)
  • Containerisation and orchestration beyond the basics (Helm, operators)
  • Exposure to Elasticsearch or other search/data platforms
  • Cloud security, secrets management and access control
  • Monitoring and alerting tooling (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog or similar)
  • Scripting for automation and tooling (Bash, Python, Go)
  • Experience modernising or migrating legacy infrastructure

Why this one

  • Real influence over tooling, workflows and how the team ships - not inheriting someone else's setup
  • A greenfield build with room to do it properly from the start
  • Direct line to the Engineering Lead and a say in technical direction
  • A small team where your work is visible and what you build gets used
  • Permanent role, hybrid working, clear scope to grow as the team expands
  • Modern Reading office with free on-site parking
