Software Engineer

Graduate / Placement Student

Software Engineering & Web Development

electronRx Ltd, Cambridge, UK

A Note From Our Founder

I founded electronRx because I believed that the technology to transform how we understand the human body already existed in our pockets. Seven years later, that belief has become validated science, authorised medical technology, and active clinical programmes running across multiple countries. We are now at the point where the scale begins.

What drives this company is not a product roadmap or a market thesis. It is a genuine conviction that people living with cardiorespiratory disease deserve better tools, more insight, and more control over their own health. Every line of code, every dataset, every clinical investigation we run is in service of that. When you work here, you feel it.

I am looking for people who want to build something that matters. Not just technically capable graduates, but individuals who care about the purpose behind the work and who want to grow in an environment where their contribution is real and visible from day one. If that is you, I would love to hear from you.

Dr Bipin Patel, CEO and Founder, electronRx

The Opportunity

Cardiorespiratory disease is the leading cause of death globally, and for the vast majority of those affected, the current tools for monitoring their condition are inaccessible, infrequent, and hospital-bound. electronRx has developed a platform that changes that. Using only a smartphone - no hardware, no attachments, no specialist environment - our technology captures physiological signals that were previously invisible outside a clinical setting.

We are not at the beginning of that story. The technology works, the validation data is published, and we hold Class IIa authorisation from the MHRA as a Software as a Medical Device. What we are building now is the infrastructure to take it to hundreds of thousands of people across multiple countries and clinical programmes.

The graduate who joins at this point will not be maintaining legacy systems or running test scripts in the background. They will be building the technology that underpins active clinical investigations, contributing to global deployments, and working alongside data scientists, engineers, and clinicians on problems that genuinely matter.

The Role

We are looking for a technically capable graduate or placement student focused on software engineering and web application development, who will be key in building and optimising our cloud-based data pipelines. This role focuses on the core infrastructure, from the systems that process raw physiological signals to the modern web interfaces through which clinicians and patients interact with the results. This is a generalist role by design where you will move between building patient-facing web applications, internal tooling, and clinical data workflows. The work shifts depending on where the team needs momentum, and that is a feature, not a limitation. If you thrive when the problem keeps changing, you will do well here.

What You Will Work On

  • Developing and optimising cloud-based data pipelines for capturing, processing, and storing physiological and clinical data.
  • Building and contributing to patient-facing or investigator-facing web applications using modern frameworks.
  • Supporting and improving the core systems through which patient data is captured, processed, and stored.
  • Contributing to internal tools, dashboards, and applications used by clinicians and the commercial team.
  • Building rapid prototypes across software workflows to quickly validate new ideas and technologies.
  • Collaborating directly with engineers, data scientists, and clinicians to solve practical software engineering and infrastructure problems.
  • Supporting basic data exploration and analysis of physiological and clinical datasets from live investigations.
  • Communicating findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Working across multiple concurrent projects with varying requirements and timescales.

What We Are Looking For

You will be studying towards a degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or a similar discipline. Strong Python is the baseline. Beyond that, we are more interested in depth in two or three areas than in someone who has skimmed the surface of everything on the list. If you are genuinely strong in the foundations and motivated to go further, we will back you to develop the rest.

Core:

  • Strong programming ability in Python
  • Experience with JavaScript and modern web development, including React
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills applied to real data
  • Experience working with databases and data-driven applications
  • The ability to communicate your thinking clearly to people outside your discipline

Valued:

  • Google Cloud Platform (GCP) experience or familiarity with other cloud platforms (AWS, or Firebase)
  • Experience developing and managing containers using Docker
  • Familiarity with back-end languages such as Node.js, C#, or C++
  • SQL and/or NoSQL databases
  • Signal processing or time-series analysis
  • Any prior exposure to healthcare, medical technology, or regulated software environments

What matters as much as any of the above: intellectual curiosity, genuine care about the application, and the kind of initiative that does not wait to be told what to do next.

What We Offer

A 12-month placement or internship at electronRx is substantive work. You will be given ownership of real deliverables, not peripheral tasks designed to occupy a placement student. You will sit in on clinical and commercial conversations that most people at this stage of their career never get close to. You will leave understanding what it takes to build regulated medical technology from first principles.

  • Placement stipend of £25,000 per annum
  • A personal training budget for skills that benefit you and the work
  • Direct mentorship from engineers, data scientists, and clinicians working at the frontier of digital health
  • A central Cambridge office at Barclays Eagle Labs, 28 Chesterton Road, with secure parking and cycle storage
  • A hybrid work arrangement - in-office and remote, flexed to the needs of your projects
  • The genuine possibility of returning in a full-time role, or carrying the experience forward wherever you go next

How to Apply

Send your CV and a short covering note - no more than a page - to careers@electronrx.com. Tell us what draws you to this work specifically, and point us to anything you have built, written, or contributed to that you are proud of. We read everything. Duration: 12 months. Start date: flexible by arrangement.

About electronRx

electronRx is a deep tech medical technology company based in Cambridge, UK. We hold MHRA Class IIa authorisation as a Software as a Medical Device manufacturer and are ISO 13485 certified. Our technology is in active clinical investigation at Cambridge University Hospitals and deployed in Japan. We have been recognised as a Deep Tech Pioneer by HelloTomorrow in both 2023 and 2024, and our science has been presented at the European Respiratory Society and the American Thoracic Society international conferences. We are a small team of scientists, engineers, and clinical professionals. Everyone here works on things that matter and understands why they matter. We have been building this for seven years and we are still early enough that the people who join now will leave a clear Mark.

Diversity and Inclusion

We are building technology for everyone and we believe the team that builds it should reflect that ambition. We actively welcome applications from all backgrounds, regardless of race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or national origin. If you are uncertain whether you meet every criterion above, please apply anyway. The candidates we remember are rarely the ones who ticked every box.
