Senior Software Engineer - Staff Level
Location: UK - remote
Role: contract - 12+ months
About the Role
They’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join their team, the engine that connects workers with short- and long-term opportunities. You’ll play a key role in modernizing a critical platform, ensuring supply meets demand efficiently while maintaining high performance and reliability.
This is a unique opportunity to work on a platform undergoing major technical transformation, moving from a Ruby monolith to a modern ecosystem built on Java, Rust, Python, and React. What You’ll Do
- Lead feature-by-feature decommissioning of the Ruby monolith
- Drive architectural decisions and help shape the long-term evolution of the platform
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to propose and implement safe, aggressive extraction strategies
- Ensure high-quality, reliable code with comprehensive unit, integration, and end-to-end tests
- Maintain documentation, observability solutions, and performance monitoring across the platform
What They’re Looking For
Technical Skills:
- Strong experience in Django or Ruby (with willingness to learn the other)
- Advanced experience in Java or Rust (with willingness to learn the other)
- Familiarity with Python
- RESTful API and GraphQL development
- Database design and optimization (Postgres, MySQL, Redis)
- Experience leveraging AI tools to accelerate development is a plus
Soft Skills:
- Proven ability to lead complex engineering initiatives
- Strong collaboration and communication with product and engineering teams
- Excellent problem-solving and technical debt assessment skills
- Leadership in architecture design and technical decision-making
