Commissioning Engineer - Cisco/LAN/WAN/Routing & Switching

Location: Glasgow - 100% Onsite

Contract: 6 months Rolling

Rate: £250-£300 per day, all inclusive

IR35: Outside IR35

Important Location Criteria

This position is 100% onsite in Glasgow/Kirkintilloch.

Candidates must currently be based in Scotland, with Glasgow-based candidates preferred. Candidates looking to relocate to Scotland from elsewhere will not be considered.

Spec:

We are looking for an experienced Commissioning Engineer to provide 3rd line technical support within a Project Engineering team, working across project delivery, integration and project services covering Design, Build and Deploy.

The role requires strong networking experience and the ability to understand detailed customer designs, provide technical ownership and support the delivery of network solutions for high-profile accounts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out commissioning, documentation and associated administrative tasks.
  • Receive implementation plans from Project Engineers and carry out peer reviews.
  • Assess network topology and circuitry for project planning.
  • Write and provide configuration scripts for a variety of network devices and vendors.
  • Support Project Engineers with the provision of network configuration scripts.
  • Monitor customer networks during planned network changes.
  • Conduct network risk assessments before and after scheduled changes.
  • Update and build circuitry information within databases.
  • Work with network components and systems including Xtran, SDH and PDH.
  • Work across different network media including fibre, copper, leased lines, radio and 4G.
  • Support the development and evolution of products, with a focus on improving the customer experience throughout the product life cycle.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Experience designing LAN and WAN solutions, preferably within a large enterprise environment, either in-house or within a customer/ISP environment.
  • Excellent knowledge of Cisco IOS.
  • Strong routing and switching knowledge.
  • Experience working with devices such as:
    • Cisco 2800, 2900, 3800 and 3900 series Routers
    • ASR900 series Routers
    • 2520 and 4010 Switches
  • Competent understanding of PDH/SDH concepts.
  • Relevant industry experience within a technology field.
  • CCNA or CCDA - either qualification is acceptable.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage workload and multitask.
  • Experience providing telephone support and maintaining accurate records.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Excel.
  • Good communication skills.

Customer & Stakeholder Skills

You should have experience dealing face-to-face with customers in a high-level technical capacity, such as a Consultant, Designer or Senior Engineer, including delivering presentations.

You will need to be confident and professional when handling difficult customer discussions and presenting to technical audiences, customers and senior management.

You should also be capable of resolving complex technical problems, taking responsibility for decisions and considering the impact of those decisions on the business and its customers.

Desirable

  • CCNP or CCDP would be beneficial but is not essential.
