Clearance: Active SC Clearance required

Rate: £550/day (Inside IR35) via Umb

Overview

We are seeking an experienced SC Cleared Observability Consultant to join a specialist practice delivering high-impact advisory, design, and implementation services.

This role requires deep expertise across modern observability platforms and open-source technologies, with a strong focus on enabling organisations to mature their observability capabilities and align them to broader business and IT strategies.

You will play a key role in shaping observability roadmaps, designing scalable architectures, and delivering enterprise-grade implementations.

Key Responsibilities

Observability Strategy & Advisory

• Lead discovery workshops to assess observability maturity and define strategic roadmaps
• Evaluate existing monitoring landscapes and recommend tooling strategies
• Translate business and technical requirements into actionable observability use cases
• Provide guidance on best practices including OpenTelemetry, SRE principles, and telemetry management

Architecture & Solution Design

• Design end-to-end observability solutions across logs, metrics, traces, and user experience
• Develop distributed tracing and APM strategies
• Define telemetry data pipelines and instrumentation approaches
• Ensure solutions are scalable, secure, and cost-efficient

Tooling Implementation

• Deploy and configure observability platforms (e.g. Dynatrace, Splunk, Grafana, Elastic, Cribl)
• Implement OpenTelemetry collectors, agents, and SDKs
• Build dashboards, alerts, and automation workflows
• Integrate observability platforms with ITSM, AIOps, and event management tools

Troubleshooting & Performance Engineering

• Analyse and resolve application, infrastructure, and network performance issues
• Lead root cause analysis and optimisation initiatives
• Enable proactive monitoring through anomaly detection and alert tuning

Skills & Experience Required

• Active SC Clearance
• Strong expertise in observability frameworks and telemetry pipelines
• Deep understanding of observability pillars: metrics, logs, traces, and user experience
• Hands-on experience with at least two enterprise tools (e.g. Dynatrace, Splunk, Grafana, Cribl)
• Strong knowledge of observability platform architecture and cloud integrations
• Experience with APIs, tagging strategies, and problem detection workflows
• Scripting and automation skills (Python, Bash, Terraform, Ansible)
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
• Proven background in enterprise consulting, design, and implementation (10+ years)

Desirable Skills

• Relevant certifications in observability platforms or OpenTelemetry/Prometheus
• Experience with DevOps and platform engineering practices (CI/CD, Git, automation)
• Knowledge of cloud-native observability (AWS CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, Prometheus, eBPF)
• Understanding of networking protocols (Syslog, SNMP, OTLP)
• Experience integrating observability with ITSM and alerting platforms
• Cloud or CNCF certifications
