Education Subject Specialist (GCSE & A Level) – EdTech Role, London
m2r Education are working in partnership with an innovative education technology organisation to recruit outstanding Subject Specialists in Maths, Chemistry and History for an exciting freelance project based in Central London.
This is a fantastic opportunity for exceptional classroom teachers with deep subject knowledge, strong pedagogy and a genuine passion for improving how students learn. The work is mainly hands-on, in-the-room collaboration, with some lighter remote and async tasks as required.
The successful candidates will support product and content development by providing expert feedback, teaching insight and practical subject expertise. This role would suit current or very recent UK secondary / sixth form teachers who have progressed quickly on the teaching and pedagogy track, such as Heads of Department, Lead Practitioners, Subject Leads or similar.
The Role
The work will be a mix of in-person collaboration at the office and occasional remote / async tasks. The main focus is the in-person time with the product team.
In-person responsibilities include:
- Feedback sessions on prototypes and recent work, giving candid and structured feedback on what is strong, what is wrong and what an expert teacher would never do.
- Short coaching sessions for staff on how the subject is best taught, including common misconceptions, sequencing, explanations, exam technique and model answers.
- Occasional live tutoring sessions so the team can observe excellent pedagogy in practice.
Remote / async responsibilities may include:
- Working through the live platform and flagging what is strong and what feels off.
- Completing self-contained deliverables such as feature reviews, model answers, teaching breakdowns of tricky topics, or pedagogy / content sense-checks.
- Working to clear briefs and agreed deadlines in your own time.
Requirements
- Qualified teacher with strong, current UK secondary and/or sixth form classroom experience in the relevant subject.
- Current or recent senior teaching role, such as Head of Department, Lead Practitioner, Subject Lead, Specialist Leader of Education or similar.
- Demonstrable passion for your subject and the ability to communicate that enthusiasm clearly.
- Deep pedagogical knowledge, including how students learn, where they commonly struggle, how to sequence topics and what strong exam technique looks like.
- Familiarity with UK exam boards, such as AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC, including mark schemes and assessment standards.
- Experience writing exam questions, mark schemes, curriculum content or schemes of work.
- A track record of strong student outcomes or exam results.
- Experience coaching, mentoring or training other teachers or adults.
- Articulate, candid and confident giving honest feedback to a product team.
- Comfortable working with prototypes, ambiguity and work in development.
- London-based or able to attend the Euston office in person at least fortnightly.
- Available for flexible, ad hoc hours rather than a fixed weekly schedule.
- Eligible to work in the UK and operate on a self-employed / freelance basis.
- Genuine interest in EdTech and how AI can support students, with a healthy scepticism about getting it right.
Package
- £60 per hour for in-person work.
- £45 per hour for remote / async work.
- Ad hoc and flexible hours agreed in advance.
- Around 6 hours per month initially until September, with potential to increase or decrease depending on project needs.
- In-person visits at the office near Euston, usually fortnightly and around 2 hours per visit.
- Weekday availability between 9am and 6pm, arranged to suit.
- Freelance / self-employed basis.
- NDA required, as candidates will see unreleased prototypes and confidential project materials.
Who This Role Will Not Suit
- Senior leaders who have moved away from classroom teaching into purely management-focused roles.
- Private tutors with no strong school teaching track record.
- Candidates unable to commit to regular in-person sessions in London.
- Candidates motivated mainly by the rate rather than genuine subject passion.
