Role Overview

We are seeking a talented and experienced Senior Next.js Developer to join our multidisciplinary Agile teams and help deliver world-class digital services for UK government clients.

You will lead the development of modern, accessible and high-performing Front End applications using Next.js and React, working in structured and governed environments where quality, accessibility and user experience are paramount.

You will be a core member of a blended Agile delivery squad of civil servants and supplier staff at a large-scale UK government agency, building user-centred, high-volume digital services.

You will take ownership of designing, building and supporting accessible, responsive Front End applications using Next.js and React, integrating them with a modern API-first ecosystem built on Java Spring Boot and AWS serverless technologies.

You will tackle complex technical challenges, champion modern engineering standards, and mentor colleagues to raise the capability of the wider team.

Location: Swansea, with 3 days per week on site (up to 60%)
Contract Type: Contract, Inside IR35
Rate: £400-£425 per day, Inside IR35
Security Clearance: BPSS required, with willingness and eligibility to obtain SC clearance before accessing production environments or live data
Start Date: ASAP

Key Responsibilities

• Software Development: Design, build and support robust, user-centred web applications using Next.js, React and modern JavaScript/TypeScript, writing clean, performant and maintainable code

• API Integration: Integrate Front End interfaces with Back End Java Spring Boot microservices and AWS serverless components such as Lambda and API Gateway

• Standards & Accessibility: Ensure services meet the GDS Service Standard, WCAG 2.2 accessibility guidelines and secure-by-design principles

• Agile Collaboration: Work within blended, multi-supplier Agile squads alongside Product Owners, Agile Delivery Managers, Business Analysts and SDETs to define acceptance criteria and deliver value through iterative sprints

• Quality & CI/CD: Strengthen CI/CD pipelines and embed automated testing practices, including TDD and BDD, to support high-quality releases and reliable services

• Service Assessments: Contribute to production readiness and formal government service assessments across Discovery, Alpha, Private Beta and Live

• Mentorship & Leadership: Share knowledge, conduct code reviews and coach team members to build in-house capability and support long-term service ownership

Essential Skills & Experience

• Core Development: Strong commercial experience building scalable web applications using Next.js, React.js and modern Front End tooling

• Public Sector Delivery: Proven experience delivering secure, user-centred digital services aligned to the GDS Service Standard within complex government environments

• Accessibility: Comprehensive understanding of inclusive design and strong practical experience working to WCAG 2.2 standards

• Modern Architecture: Strong practical knowledge of API-first design, RESTful microservices and cloud-native environments

• Quality & Automation: Hands-on experience integrating Front End code into CI/CD pipelines, such as Jenkins or GitHub Actions, and writing automated tests using tools such as Jest, Cypress or Playwright

• Agile Delivery: Strong track record working within blended, multidisciplinary Agile environments and adapting to legislative or policy-driven change

• Security Clearance: BPSS required, with eligibility and willingness to obtain SC clearance

Desirable

• Experience with Ruby on Rails, particularly supporting migration, maintenance or integration with Legacy Front End estates

• Experience integrating with cross-government platforms such as GOV.UK One Login, GOV.UK Pay, GOV.UK Notify or digital wallets

• Experience supporting large-scale transformation away from Legacy systems, including older Java, AIX, Oracle or Mainframe environments

• Familiarity with AWS serverless patterns, Infrastructure as Code and proactive observability/monitoring
