AI Engineer - Conversational AI & LLM Systems

AI Engineer – Conversational AI & LLM Systems

London / Hybrid/ Part-time

Overview

We are looking for an ambitious and curious AI engineer to join our team at Sway and support our platform that gives C-Suite leaders workforce intelligence to drive organisational performance.

Founded by award-winning London School of Economics alumni with backgrounds in organisational psychology and corporate leadership, Sway works with companies undergoing major change, including M&A, rapid scaling and AI transformation.

We have seen first-hand the ineffectiveness and delay of traditional management tools in detecting real risks and opportunities inside organisations. So we built VoiceBox, an AI-powered platform designed to help leaders understand how transformation is actually landing inside the workforce in real-time.

VoiceBox runs anonymous AI-led conversations with employees and analyses the results to detect emerging risks, execution blockers and opportunities in real time, helping leadership teams understand how change is actually unfolding inside their organisations. It combines conversational AI, speech models, and advanced analysis with insights from organisational psychology to create something that doesn’t currently exist: an early warning system for organisational transformation and growth risk.

We are entering the first live pilot phase with customers and are looking for an AI-native engineer to help us improve and expand the system.

If you enjoy building real AI products, are happy to work autonomously and want a front row seat to the changing landscape of work, this role will give you the chance to work directly on a live platform used by leadership teams navigating complex organisational change.

The Role

We are looking for an early-career AI Systems Engineer to work directly with the Co-Founders and our Fractional CTO (Ex-Meta, Ex-Posthog) to improve and expand the Voicebox platform. This role is ideal for a computer science graduate or postgraduate with strong AI and software engineering skills, who wants to work on real-world AI systems rather than purely theoretical machine learning.

You will help us:

  • Optimise and refine our conversational AI system
  • Build new features for the Voicebox platform
  • Debug and improve AI workflows
  • Experiment with new AI tools and models

This role offers a rare opportunity to work at the intersection of AI systems, Organisational psychology and Real-world transformation challenges. You will work closely with founders, product leaders and C-suite corporate executives in this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Improve and optimise Voicebox’s conversational AI workflows
  • Debug and fix issues across AI pipelines and integrations
  • Develop new product features for the platform
  • Integrate external AI services (speech, LLMs, APIs)
  • Experiment with prompt design, evaluation and AI model behaviour
  • Support deployment and scaling of the system during live pilots
  • Contribute ideas to product design and system architecture

Required Skills

We are looking for someone with strong fundamentals and curiosity about AI systems.

Essential skills

  • Strong programming ability in TypeScript
  • Experience with Next.js (App Router, API routes, server components)
  • Experience working with AI APIs, specifically OpenAI (GPT-5) and ElevenLabs
  • Comfort working with REST APIs and third-party integrations (Resend, Vercel Blob, etc.)
  • Experience with Prisma ORM and PostgreSQL
  • Ability to debug and iterate quickly in a fast-moving environment
  • Familiarity with Git and modern development workflows

Nice to have

  • Experience with ElevenLabs Conversational AI or other speech/voice platforms
  • Experience building AI agents or chatbots
  • Familiarity with structured output parsing (e.g. Zod schemas with OpenAI)
  • Experience with Ant Design or similar component libraries
  • Experience with NextAuth.js and role-based access control
  • Familiarity with Vercel deployment and serverless architecture
  • Experience with Tailwind CSS
  • Basic experience with data analysis, NLP, or sentiment analysis

Who We're Looking For

The ideal candidate is someone who:

  • is excited by building real AI products
  • experiments with new AI tools constantly
  • enjoys solving messy real-world problems
  • wants to work in a small, fast-moving team
  • is curious about the intersection of technology and human behaviour

We care more about projects, curiosity and enthusiasm than years of experience.

If you have built interesting AI tools, prototypes or side projects, we want to hear about them.

Salary & Benefits

  • £25–£35/hour depending on experience (equivalent of up to £72,000/annum)
  • Flexible part-time role (10–20 hours/week)
  • Designed to fit alongside postgraduate study or early-career exploration

Sway plans to grow fast in 2026. Exceptional candidates may also have the opportunity to transition into a full-time AI engineering role as the product scales.
