Overview of the Business Architect

The Business Architect will play a key role in shaping digital transformation by defining business roadmaps that support organisational strategy. This position safeguards the organisation’s operating model, drives alignment between business and technology teams, and ensures that change demand is clearly articulated and prioritised. The role works closely with senior leaders to guarantee that solutions are delivered in accordance with established governance, enterprise architecture principles, and recognised best practice.

Main Responsibilities

Operating Model Governance

  • Maintain oversight of operating model design across business areas
  • Establish and apply standards to ensure consistency in design approaches
  • Identify integration challenges and gaps, offering solutions to resolve them
  • Support the communication of design decisions and assist with change management activities

Change & Demand Oversight

  • Oversee the capture and assessment of strategic and operational demand for change
  • Partner with PMO teams to coordinate demand intake and prioritisation
  • Support initiation of delivery frameworks across methodologies (Agile, Waterfall, etc.)
  • Evaluate and prioritise initiatives based on risk, value, compliance, and safety considerations

Portfolio & Roadmap Development

  • Develop digital business roadmaps that reflect strategic direction
  • Contribute to budgeting discussions and resource planning for forthcoming projects
  • Track portfolio performance and ensure expected value is realised
  • Maintain alignment between business priorities and technology strategies

Business Architecture Leadership

  • Provide expert advice on business processes, capabilities, and operating structures
  • Contribute to strategic planning and organisational innovation efforts
  • Maintain and enhance the organisation’s business architecture knowledge base
  • Partner with Enterprise Architecture to define solution concepts and business cases
  • Lead and develop a team of Business Analysts and Business Architecture professionals
  • Manage workload distribution, performance processes, and personal development planning
  • Foster a strong culture of knowledge sharing, collaboration, and continuous improvement

Business Analysis

  • Perform high-level analysis to support business-led change initiatives
  • Produce key artefacts including outcome definitions, financial assessments, and investment proposals

Required Skills & Experience

Qualifications

  • Degree in business, information systems, or a related field
  • Additional certifications (e.g., MBA, PRINCE2, ITIL, Business Analysis qualifications) are desirable

Professional Experience

  • Solid background in Business Architecture, Business Analysis, portfolio and project methodologies
  • Excellent understanding of software development processes and project delivery lifecycles
  • Demonstrated ability to manage senior stakeholders
  • Proven leadership experience including mentoring, coaching, and line management
  • Experience in consultancy, relationship management, or account management
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to translate ideas into practical delivery plans
  • Confident change leader with strong influencing and negotiating skills
  • Skilled at developing teams and enhancing capability
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills
  • Collaborative approach with a proactive and determined mindset
  • Strong analytical thinking and attention to detail
  • Ability to distil complex information into clear, concise messages
  • Willing to travel as required
