Senior Interaction Designer

We are looking for an experienced Senior Interaction Designer to join a multidisciplinary digital team within a UK government body. You will play a key role in shaping user-centred solutions across digital and non-digital services, leading design activity, and championing accessibility, inclusion and best practice across teams.

This role requires a strong practitioner who is comfortable working in the open, collaborating widely, and supporting the wider government design community.

  • Contract Length: 12 months
  • Location: 60% in office - Manchester or Leeds
  • Rate: Up to £700 per day (inside IR35) and dependent on interview performance
  • Security Clearance: BPSS

Key Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate best practice in user-centred design for both digital and non-digital interactions
  • Work effectively across multidisciplinary agile teams, adapting quickly to change
  • Champion accessibility and inclusion, considering the impact of new and emerging technologies
  • Collaborate with designers across other teams, providing constructive feedback and contributing to shared design patterns
  • Use user research and analytics to understand user needs and identify design opportunities
  • Create and iterate prototypes using appropriate tools and methodologies, advising others on best practice
  • Lead and coordinate design work, supporting and mentoring other designers where required
  • Actively support and contribute to the cross-government design community

Essential Skills & Experience

User Focus

  • Work closely with User Researchers to plan and deliver research activities
  • Use research findings to develop a deep understanding of user needs and behaviours

Evidence & Context-Based Design

  • Lead the design of solutions grounded in evidence, research and data
  • Identify gaps in knowledge and help teams address uncertainty through design

Prototyping

  • Use a range of prototyping tools and techniques
  • Advise and support others on prototyping approaches and best practice

Communication

  • Clearly present design work and explain ideas to a wide range of stakeholders
  • Actively listen to feedback and facilitate constructive design discussions

Accessibility

  • Promote inclusive design principles
  • Strong knowledge of WCAG 2.1 and experience designing to AA accessibility standards

Collaboration

  • Work in the open and engage others throughout the design process
  • Offer advice on improving ways of working to enhance collaboration across teams
