AI/ML Data Scientist / ML Engineer - 3-Month Contract

Overview

A leading UK bank is seeking an experienced AI/ML professional to join their cross-functional delivery team. This role suits someone with strong hands-on technical expertise and a track record of delivering business-focused AI/ML solutions, including LLM-based applications.

You'll work closely with data scientists, software engineers, and ML engineers to design, experiment, validate, and deploy production-grade AI systems for customer-facing applications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead hypothesis generation, experimentation, and model validation to support new AI/ML business solutions.
  • Design, run, and manage data science experiments with high standards of rigor and reproducibility.
  • Build and deploy machine learning models-including LLM-powered solutions-to solve real business problems.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams (data science, software engineering, ML engineering) to develop full end-to-end production systems.
  • Support architectural discussions and promote best practices in ML engineering and cloud deployments.
  • Maintain version-controlled codebases and contribute to CI/CD, testing, and documentation processes.
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to team members as needed.
Required Skills & Experience Technical Skills
  • Strong expertise in Python for data science and ML engineering.
  • Solid hands-on experience with AWS, including services such as Amazon SageMaker.
  • Comfortable with software version control (Git) and collaborative workflows.
  • Experience with experiment tracking/management tools (e.g., SageMaker Studio, MLflow, Weights & Biases).
Machine Learning Expertise
  • Proven ability to build, test, and validate hypotheses through well-designed ML experiments.
  • Hands-on experience creating and deploying AI/ML models, including Large Language Models (LLMs).
  • Understanding of MLOps principles and deploying models into production environments.
Collaboration & Delivery
  • Experience working within - and ideally leading - cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to translate complex business challenges into practical data-driven solutions.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
Desirable
  • Experience in banking or financial services.
  • Exposure to customer-facing ML/AI systems.
  • Familiarity with LLM fine-tuning, evaluation frameworks, or prompt engineering.
