Principal Development Operations Engineer – Integration

Job summary

North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) is seeking a Principal Development Operations Engineer - Integration to lead the design and delivery of integration solutions that underpin our digital transformation. As the Trust's subject matter expert in integration development, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping and implementing digital services that support our mission: to be there when people need us most.

This is a leadership role at the heart of NWAS's Digital plan, which is focused on delivering outstanding, inclusive care, building a supportive culture, enabling responsive care through partnerships, and embedding continuous improvement and innovation. You'll work closely with technical teams, stakeholders, and partners to deliver integration solutions that are robust, scalable, and future-ready.

Main duties of the job

Main Duties

  • Lead the development of integration and interoperability solutions in line with Trust standards and digital strategy.
  • Build and optimise data integration platforms to support high-quality, responsive care and digital transformation.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable, secure, and flexible enterprise solutions.
  • Promote best practice in coding, change management, and documentation.
  • Mentor and support the professional development of the integration team.
  • Ensure compliance with information governance, data protection, and NHS standards.
  • Drive continuous improvement, innovation, and adoption of new technologies.
  • Support business continuity, risk management, and service resilience.
  • Represent NWAS Digital at project meetings, technical workshops, and with external partners.

About us

North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust provides 24 hour, 365 days a year accident and emergency services to those in need of emergency medical treatment and transport.

Our highly skilled staff provide life-saving care to patients in the community and take people to hospital or a place of care if needed.We also provide non-emergency patient transport services for those patients who require non-emergency transport to and from hospital and who are unable to travel unaided because of their medical condition or clinical need.

Alongside the other emergency services, we also work to ensure the safety of the public and treatment of patients in the event of a major incident.

We also deliver the NHS 111 service in the North West. NHS 111 replaced NHS Direct in 2013. This service was introduced to make it easier for people to access local NHS healthcare services in England. It provides non-emergency medical help fast, and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Essential
  • Excellent communication skills - verbal, written, presentational and interpersonal
  • Advanced knowledge of healthcare integration technologies and standards, such as HL7, IHE, FHIR
  • Knowledge of information security and data protection in respect of patient and clinical information
  • Advanced skills in information flow analysis and data mapping between systems, able to design solutions to support all necessary information flows
  • Industrial grade programming skills, fully conversant with several of the following languages and technologies: Cache Object Script, JavaScript, VB/VBscript, C#, SQL, HTML, XML, XSLT, XDS, SOAP/RESTful Web Services
  • Good organising skills with attention to detail and the need for accuracy
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams across organizations
  • Comfortable working to agreed objectives, delivering on a complex project plan and taking responsibility without supervision for completion of tasks

Qualifications

Essential
  • Educated to MSc level in relevant subject; or equivalent level of experience of working at a similar level in this area and currently working towards a master's degree
  • Evidence of relevant CPD activities
  • Evidence of management experience
  • Experience of professional and engaging report writing for and presentation to senior management audiences and the development of other documents such as research findings, options appraisals, risk analysis, and proposals
  • Have demonstrable working experience in digital development practices such as: systems analysis, development, Agile / Devops, programming, testing, enterprise architecture and project management
  • Substantial knowledge of system integration interfaces and the principles between data exchange between systems
  • Substantial digital literacy in network principles, client/server models and databases
  • Substantial knowledge of automated testing processes and an understanding of how this fits within the overall delivery lifecycle
  • Excellent knowledge of defect management and structured approaches to resolution of issues

Experience

Essential
  • Substantial experience in developing web software using .NET C# and ASP technology stack
  • Substantial experience of Agile development methodologies (eg. Scrum, Kanban etc)
  • Substantial experience of code version control using Git
  • Substantial experience of automated testing and developer testing practices
  • Substantial experience involving close working relationships with business users
  • Experience supporting business applications inside and outside working hours
