Paying £110k-£140k + benefits
Hybrid working, 3 days a week in Central London
We're hiring an Engineering Lead for a high-growth, AI-driven company that's reshaping how businesses leverage data and machine learning. This is an opportunity to work closely with the founder to lead technical strategy, manage and scale the engineering and data science teams, and help shape the product roadmap during a critical growth phase.
About the Role
This is a hands-on leadership position with a clear growth trajectory. You'll initially spend up to 50% of your time coding, but will shift toward high-level leadership, team management and architecture over the next year as the team grows.
You'll work closely with the founder and leadership team, serving as the technical voice in C-suite meetings - offering quick, well-founded assessments of engineering scope, resource requirements, and timelines.
You'll oversee a small but growing cross-functional team of engineers and data scientists, with the remit to scale and eventually manage 4 squads.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as technical lead across engineering, data science, and ML/AI
- Directly manage and grow engineering and data science teams
- Make architectural decisions and ensure high technical standards
- Translate product vision into engineering roadmaps and execution plans
- Provide rapid, high-quality technical assessments during product discussions
- Maintain balance between team empowerment and hands-on guidance
Tech Environment
- Backend: Node.js / NestJS (must-have)
- Frontend: React / Angular (either is fine)
- Python: Not day-to-day, but strong understanding needed to oversee ML/data science function
- Cloud: GCP stack (AWS or Azure acceptable)
- Full-stack preferred, backend-leaning also welcome
You'll Excel If You Have:
- Previous startup leadership experience (founder, founding/early hire, or consultant)
- Experience in Adtech, Martech, or marketing automation environments
- A collaborative leadership style - enabling, not directing
- A deep technical background with a strong grasp of systems architecture
- Ability to shift from hands-on to high-level strategy as the team grows
- Strong commercial instinct - balancing product vision with engineering realities
This is a great opportunity for an engineering leader to own the technical arm and have an make from day one.
