Overview:

As an ICT Apprentice within Birmingham City Council’s Digital & Technology Services team, you will play a key part in delivering responsive, customer-focused IT support across the organisation. This hands-on role offers the opportunity to gain practical experience while working towards a recognised apprenticeship qualification.

You will support colleagues by helping to resolve ICT queries, triaging issues through the helpdesk, and guiding users on systems such as Microsoft 365, Teams, and other essential Council technologies. You’ll assist with meetings, data management tasks, device setup and recovery, and the onboarding of new starters. Working across a variety of service areas, you’ll contribute to improvement initiatives, support small ICT projects, and help ensure compliance with data protection and GDPR requirements.

Throughout the apprenticeship, you’ll develop strong communication, problem-solving, and technical skills, working with experienced ICT professionals who will support your training and development. This role is ideal for someone with an interest in technology, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to delivering excellent service to colleagues across the Council.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide responsive, customer-focused ICT support, ensuring services meet the needs of the organisation and its users.
  • Investigate, triage, and escalate ICT issues raised through the helpdesk, working with specialist teams where needed.
  • Support users with software and digital tools, including Microsoft 365, Teams, remote working tools, and encryption systems.
  • Assist with data management and reporting, helping to interpret reports, resolve data issues, and support MIS tasks.
  • Coordinate ICT equipment and access for starters, movers, and leavers, including issuing, modifying, and recovering devices and accounts.
  • Support ICT improvement initiatives, including device replacement programmes, new service rollouts, and small ICT project requests.
  • Provide ICT-related communication and guidance, helping ensure correct information management and GDPR compliance.
  • Support performance meetings by preparing and displaying relevant data and information for managers and staff.
  • Assist with administrative tasks for governance meetings, such as scheduling, preparing materials, and documenting outcomes.

Desirable skills:

  • Basic IT skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Willingness to learn and complete an apprenticeship programme.

Entry requirements:

  • 3 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grades 4+ (A-C) in any subject.
  • GCSE Maths and English (or equivalents) at grades 3+ (D or above).
  • Prospective apprentices must not hold an existing qualification at the same or higher level as this apprenticeship in a similar subject.

You may also have a combination of qualifications and experience which demonstrate the minimum foundation needed for the programme. In this instance you could still be considered for the programme.

Working hours: 36.5 hours per week Monday to Friday.
